Warner Bros. Reveals Whether ‘The Batman Part II’ Has Been Canceled After Many Delays

Apr 24, 2025

The past few years have seen a lot of changes happen within Warner Bros. and DC Studios, leaving the state of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II in uncertainty. Last week, following Robert Pattinson signing on to appear in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3, the internet has been ablaze with rumors that Part II has been secretly canceled by Warner Bros. These rumors are further fueled by the lack of a completed script from Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin. The script itself has faced many delays, as it was believed that the deadline for the screenplay was last December. While the online rumor mill keeps spinning about DC giving up on The Batman Part II, a Warner Bros. executive is here to set the record straight.
During an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures co-CEOs, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, addressed the state of The Batman Part II and whether there is any merit to the online rumors. The pair began by confirming that Warner Bros. has little oversight over The Batman Part II or any of the upcoming DC projects. “We’re not in the weeds on the Batman stuff,” Pam Abdy began. “It’s really James and Peter Safran who run DC.” That comes as great news to DC fans following the incredibly divisive DCEU. While some were a fan of the franchise, many noticed the blatant corporate oversight that hampered the quality of the movies.

‘The Batman Part II’ might have to look beyond The Dark Knight’s second year in Gotham.

Regarding The Batman Part II’s status, Abdy confirmed that the film is still in the works. Moreover, DC Studios and Warner Bros. are accepting of the delays, as they know that Matt Reeves will take his time to produce the best script and movie he possibly can. They explained:

“We have a bit of other collaboration with Matt Reeves, but Peter and James know he is a writer-directing auteur in his own right, and that it will come when he’s written his best Batman script and is ready.”

‘The Batman Part II’ Has Been Delayed Multiple Times

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Batman fans are becoming increasingly impatient regarding the upcoming sequel. The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, was released in 2022 to much acclaim from fans and a strong box office performance. It was then confirmed that the movie would be part of a trilogy. Part II was greenlit shortly after The Batman’s success, but the project has been in development for almost three years.
The most recent update on the film is a dour one. Part II was slated for release in late 2026. However, with the script still incomplete, this has been pushed back by a full year to 2027. Following the news of the movie’s delayed release, James Gunn took to social media to defend Matt Reeves from the impatient fans. “To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” the co-president of DC Studios said, before giving a lesson in sequel history. “7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol. 3.”
