‘Screamboat,’ the Latest Mickey Mouse Public Domain Slasher, Gets a Chilling Physical Media & VOD Release Date
Apr 27, 2025
One of the key ingredients to this modern slasher Renaissance horror fans are currently living in has been public domain scares. This has included childhood icons like Winnie-The-Pooh and Cinderella. However, the star of late has been Mickey Mouse, who entered the public domain last year. He already has more than a few slashers to choose from and his latest, Screamboat, hit theaters earlier this month. Now, with its bloody run on the big screen over, Screamboat has announced its physical media and VOD release dates.
Exclusively reported by Bloody Disgusting, Screamboat will be coming to DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital on May 2nd from Desktop Entertainment. The Blu-ray will be $24.99 USD while the DVD will be $19.99. The cover art is the same as the theatrical poster that saw our deadly mouse steering the ship on top of his latest kill.
What Is ‘Screamboat’ About?
Screamboat, a twisted horror version of Mickey Mouse’s debut cartoon Steamboat Willie, follows a group of ill-fated people on a New York City ferry ride gone horribly wrong. A mouse has turned into a psychotic killer. David Howard Thornton, best known for his role as Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, takes on the role of the demented mouse. This isn’t the first time Thornton has taken on a popular children’s character, as he played The Grinch in the unofficial Dr. Seuss slasher Mean One. That festive slasher’s director, Steven LaMorte, was also at the helm for Screamboat. The film stars Kailey Hyman (Terrifier 2), Amy Schumacher, Jesse Posey, and Allison Pittel.
This misadventure was from the same producing team that brought horror fans Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 as well, so the gore level is cranked up for this unrated killing spree. While Screamboat didn’t get much love, with a 48% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it did have some unique ideas, like having their version of Mickey Mouse stay actual mouse-sized. This leads to some humorous kills that don’t shy away from making this beloved character as creepy and scary as possible. That isn’t hard with the talent of Thornton behind those insane whiskers. Screamboat now joins Mouse Trap in Mickey Mouse’s ever-growing public domain slasher collection.
