Did You Miss Sinners In 70MM IMAX? Ryan Coogler’s Horror Gets Re-Release Date As Thunderbolts* Takes Over
May 1, 2025
Sinners has received an official release date for its 70MM IMAX re-release. The new horror movie sees director Ryan Coogler re-teaming with his longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan, who plays a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack, who return to their Mississippi hometown in 1932, only to find it besieged by a terrifying evil. Although the movie has broken multiple box office records, the Sinners IMAX release is drawing to a close, concluding at the end of the day on Thursday, May 1, as the splashy Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster Thunderbolts* kicks off its theatrical run.
Per IndieWire, as IMAX theaters begin to be taken over by Thunderbolts*, Sinners has set a date for an IMAX re-release. The 70MM IMAX re-release will run in nine theaters across North America from Thursday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 21, alongside the movie’s ongoing theatrical run in traditional formats. Among the nine theaters in question are L.A.’s City Walk Stadium 19 + IMAX, San Francisco’s Metreon 16 + IMAX, Irvine’s Irvine Spectrum and IMAX, Phoenix’s Arizona Mills IMAX, New York City’s Lincoln Square 13 + IMAX, Dallas’ Webb Chapel IMAX, Indianapolis’ Indiana State Museum, Ft. Lauderdale’s Autonation IMAX, and Toronto’s Colossus IMAX.
Read a statement on the re-release from Warner Bros. Pictures President of Global Distribution Jeff Goldstein below:
Audiences have spoken and we listened. If ever a film needed to be experienced in this incredible larger-than-life format, it’s Sinners. Ryan has delivered a film that has been embraced by fans who appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating a film for this screen-filling format and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see it — or see it again — in 70mm IMAX.
What This Means For Sinners
It Is Facing Major Box Office Competition
Ultimately, this IMAX re-release will be a major test of the mettle of the Sinners box office. The movie, which had the best Easter weekend debut in history for an R-rated release and the second-best week 2 drop for R-rated horror, will be competing with Thunderbolts*, a major blockbuster outing from a long-running, record-breaking franchise. As an original horror movie, the fact that the distributor is confident about pitting it against a superhero juggernaut attached to a major IP is a very good sign.
Thunderbolts* features MCU characters from a variety of other movies and shows, including Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Additionally, Sinners will have additional competition in the horror sphere by the time the IMAX re-release kicks off. May 9 sees the debut of Clown in a Cornfield, which is adapted from Adam Cesare’s young adult slasher novel of the same name, while the following weekend (during which the re-release premieres) sees the debut of the long-awaited sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines. If the re-release is able to gain traction despite there being such enticing horror offerings elsewhere, that bodes well for the potential longevity of the new Ryan Coogler movie.
Our Take On The Sinners IMAX Re-Release
Its Box Office Does Not Necessarily Need The Boost
Because the re-release is running in so few theaters, it most likely will move the needle on the movie’s cumulative box office in a major way, in spite of the increased ticket prices for the premium format. However, it may not have to. Although the substantial Sinners budget, which is reportedly around $90 million, means that its break-even point is probably $225 million, it has already earned $181.4 million worldwide at the time of writing. As it climbs, the IMAX re-release will likely be more of a victory lap, proving what a hunger there is for the movie in general.
