Having completed a full month of release in theaters worldwide, A Minecraft Movie is now firmly in the home stretch. Does it have what it would take for it to pass the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide? Only time will tell. As things stand, it’s well on its way to that hugely important milestone, thanks to an incredible theatrical run that saw massive fan turnout despite mediocre reviews. A Minecraft Movie braved the Sinners wave not too long after its record-breaking debut, as the two films joined hands to turn the narrative around for a struggling Warner Bros.
With nearly $400 million domestically and another $475 million from overseas markets, A Minecraft Movie has grossed a cumulative total of $873 million worldwide. It’s now the second-biggest hit of star Jason Momoa’s career, behind the first Aquaman movie and ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s also the second-biggest hit of Jack Black’s career, behind Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The film recently overtook Jumanji: The Next Level’s $801 million lifetime haul. If it hits the $1 billion milestone, it’ll become the first live-action film in Black’s storied career to do so; he has also voiced the titular character in four Kung Fu Panda blockbusters.
Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie shattered industry expectations in its debut. It grossed $163 million domestically in the first three days of its run domestically, out-performing fellow W.B. hit Barbie, which eventually made over $600 million in its stateside run. A Minecraft Movie also beat the opening weekend record of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which it currently trails as the second-biggest video game adaptation of all time. This is where it’ll likely remain, however, seeing as Super Mario Bros. grossed over $575 million domestically and over $1.3 billion worldwide.
W.B. Has Given ‘Minecraft’ An Extended Theatrical Window

Directed by Jared Hess, who was previously best known for having made the cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite, A Minecraft Movie opened to mediocre reviews but excellent audience reception. It holds a “rotten” 47% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. But its audience score stands at a far more impressive 86%. Hess himself was pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm shown by younger crowds in packed theaters across the nation, especially in the first few days of the film’s run. Needless to say, a sequel is being planned.
