When Marvel Studios kicked off the MCU with Iron Man, no one was aware that there was a plan, let alone a vision that would end up spanning dozens of movies and almost 20 years of blockbuster movies and TV shows. Following the Infinity Saga, and as the Multiverse Saga wraps up, a resolution of some problematic rights issues has brought many new characters into Marvel Studios’ sandbox, and that includes the X-Men.

According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Kevin Feige has now started unveiling his grand scheme for the next phases of the MCU. As many expected, this will include a big role for mutants in the Marvel story, and just like the previous sagas, the Mutant Saga is now being envisioned as a 10-year plan, which would take the franchise towards an unprecedented 30th anniversary.
However, the same report also reiterates several pieces of information that have become apparent over the years, such as the rollback on output, a focus on quality over quantity going forward, and the fact that Phase 4 and 5 suffered several missteps due to too many plates spinning around Feige’s head.
Can the MCU Survive Another 10 Years of Interconnected Storytelling?

There are still many who will have you believe that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is over, superhero movies are out of fashion, and the world just needs to move on. In reality, just like the James Bond franchise, age means very little to movie franchises as long as, even with a few stumbles, they continue to deliver to their core audience.
The MCU has delivered three of the highest-grossing movies of all-time, and chances are they will add to this tally in the next couple of years with the likes of Avengers: Doomday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day all guaranteed to blast by the $1 billion barrier with ease and potentially all hit $2 billion over their theatrical runs. Even just one of these movies every few years continues to make the franchise worthwhile for Disney, as adding in merchandising revenue and licensing, even the odd box office disappointment is compensated in the grand scheme.
The X-Men have been one of the most prominent and well-known comic book collectives for decades, and with breakout characters like Wolverine in their midst, the excitement of seeing where they fit into the MCU is one of those things that will continue to push the franchise into new territory.
There is a strong belief that Avengers: Secret Wars will act as a soft reboot of the MCU, and that will open the door to something of a rebirth for the franchise. While some characters will continue on, others will fall by the wayside. Now, with the likes of the X-Men and Fantastic Four at his disposal, along with others such as Daredevil having returned to screens, there are many new avenues to be explored, many new stories to tell, and, above all else, plenty more money to be squeezed from what is, and probably always will be, the highest-grossing movie franchise in history.

The X-Men film series consists of superhero films based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The films star an ensemble cast, focusing on Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, who is drawn into the conflict between Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart & James McAvoy) and Magneto (Ian McKellen & Michael Fassbender), who have opposing views on humanity’s relationship with mutants. Xavier believes humanity and mutants can coexist, but Magneto believes that mutants are destined to rule humanity. The films also developed subplots based on the comics’ Weapon X and Dark Phoenix storylines.

20th Century Fox earned the film rights to the characters in 1994, and after numerous drafts, Bryan Singer was hired to direct X-Men (2000) and returned for X2 (2003). He left a potential third and fourth film to direct Superman Returns, leaving Brett Ratner to direct X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Critics praised Singer’s films for their dark, realistic tone, and subtexts dealing with discrimination and intolerance, but Ratner’s film was met with mixed reviews. Nonetheless, each film outgrossed its predecessor, and Fox developed two prequels: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and X-Men: First Class (2011). Both prequels have been planned to continue into two separate trilogies. Some spin-offs of certain characters are being considered, with Deadpool being the only one confirmed so far. There are also discussions of a potential continuation to the main trilogy.
