‘Succession,’ ‘Yellowjackets, ‘Ted Lasso’ & More

Mar 1, 2023

Looking to March, it might be easier to talk about what isn’t premiering this month instead of what is. It’s a testament to how buried in the new and returning series we are. Pedro Pascal continues his move towards television domination with the returning “The Mandalorian” overlapping with HBO’s “The Last of Us,” which nears its Season 1 finale. HBO and Apple TV+ are both having solid months of returning favorites with “Succession” and “Ted Lasso,” respectively. At the same time, book adaptations are a clear popular model this month, from the anticipating Amazon series “Daisy Jones & The Six” to MGM+’s “A Spy Among Friends. It’s a busy month for critics and fans alike as we try and keep track of all of the best heavy hitters and under-the-radar gems.
“The Mandalorian”
Pedro Pascal continues to dominate 2023 in television with the upcoming Season 3 release of Disney+’s “The Mandalorian.” While season two saw Mando saying goodbye to Grogu, the trailer for Season 3 has quickly adjusted course with the two sharing screen time again. The series continues to follow the bounty hunter as he travels to Mandalore to redeem his past. Directors include Rick Famuyiwa, Lee Isaac Chung, Bryce Dallas Howard, and more.
Release Date: Season 3 premieres March 1 on Disney+.
“Daisy Jones & The Six”
Based on the novel of the same name by author Taylor Jenkins Reid, “Daisy Jones & The Six” follows a fictional band set in the ’70s who ride a wave of acclaim to stardom before crashing and burning, telling their full story for the full-time decades later. Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, and more star in the series created by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The series’ original music will also be released in tandem with the premiere. Our critic wrote, “Every musician has a story about how they made it—Daisy Jones & the Six takes that story and makes the best of it.”
Release Date: The series premieres March 3 on Amazon Prime.
“Perry Mason”
Matthew Rhys of “The Americans” fame returns for Season 2 of “Perry Mason” as the titular character. Following the events of Season 1, the 1930s set series continues into its second season, with the once private investigator now a lawyer. “The Knick” showrunners Michael Begler and Jack Amiel have stepped in to lead the show which is based on the stories by Erle Stanley Gardner. It’s been three years since the first season premiered and it’s come back stronger than ever according to our critic who reviewed it.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres March 6 on HBO.
“A Spy Among Friends”
Based on the novel of the same name by Ben Macintyre, this espionage thriller, which premiered in the United Kingdom at the end of 2022, is making its way to the U.S. by way of MGM+ this March. Set in 1963, the series follows an MI6 intelligence officer who is thrown into personal distress after learning his close friend and colleague has been working as a double agent for the KGB, defecting to the Soviet Union. Written by Alexander Cary and directed by Nick Murphy, the series stars Guy Pearce and Damian Lewis.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres March 12 on MGM+.
