‘Suicide Squad’ Star Jai Courtney Says Captain Boomerang Could Return in the DCU

May 23, 2025

One thing that has become clear several times in comic book movies, is that just because a character has died in a previous film, it doesn’t mean they are gone for good. Although James Gunn’s new DCU

is a fresh start for the DC franchise, there are some characters and actors that are set to crossover from the old DCEU into the new universe that will kick off its live-action story in this summer’s Superman. Someone hoping to join that select group is Suicide Squad star Jai Courtney

, who played Captain Boomerang in both David Ayer’s movie about the anti-hero group and Gunn’s own The Suicide Squad

.

Jai Courtney Explains His Return as Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad

James Gunn is currently developing Suicide Squad 2 and Jai Courtney wasn’t sure if he was returning at first.

However, Captain Boomerang perished along with a wave of other obscure DC characters in the opening sequence of Gunn’s movie, suggesting that his time in the franchise is over. Speaking recently to Variety while promoting his new movie Dangerous Animals at Cannes, Courtney revealed that we have perhaps not seen the last of Boomerang, and he could come back again. Noting that he has spoken to Gunn about a possible return, he said:

“I was like, ‘Come on, man. Boomerang is cool, and James is like, ‘You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ So I have hope. Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.”

James Gunn’s New Universe Is Already Bending the Rules

When setting up the new DCU, it seemed that James Gunn and Peter Safran were wiping clean the slate and abandoning the DCEU’s characters. However, over time, things have changed as Gunn’s plans have evolved and been revealed in more detail. Jason Momoa is leaving behind his role as Aquaman to return to the franchise as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Sean Gunn is continuing his multiple-character time in the franchise, following his roles as Weasel and Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad by playing Maxwell Lord in Superman.
Meanwhile, there are a lot of other characters that are continuing on in the DCU. Those already confirmed to have survived the cull of DCEU characters include Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), John Smith aka Peacemaker (John Cena), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), Weasel (Sean Gunn), and Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña).
Whether Captain Boomerang will be joining this list is yet to be seen. While Gal Gadot originally suggested that she was planning on reprising her role as Wonder Woman, and Gunn has suggested that he would love to work with Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie – although he has not revealed whether it would be in the role of Quinn or not – until such casting decisions are made official, then there is just as much chance of them not happening than becoming reality.
