‘Kakegurui’ Series Is a Streaming Hit
May 24, 2025
Netflix
has a new thriller hit on its hands: Bet, an adaptation of a popular manga, has now entered the streamer’s top ten. Loosely based on Homura Kawamoto and Tōru Naomura’s manga “Kakegurui,” which translates to “Compulsive Gambler,” Bet follows Yumeko Kawamoto (Miku Martineau) as she attends St. Dominic’s private school and begins to dominate the school’s underground gambling ring. The series debuted on Netflix on May 15, 2025, and has found a massive audience in just one week.
According to Netflix, Bet has climbed to the ninth spot on its Top 10 television series after seven days. The streamer lists that the series has generated 2.4 million views and 13.7 million hours viewed. Bet is in the Netflix Top 10 in 32 countries across the globe. That is a rather impressive stat for a series that received little to no marketing and has just naturally found an audience through the streaming platform’s algorithm. The trailer for Bet debuted on Apr. 21, 2025, three weeks before its Netflix premiere.

While there aren’t yet enough reviews for Bet to be given a Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, the psychological thriller series does have a score from audiences on the Popcornmeter, landing a solid 70%. You can check out the official synopsis for the show below.
“A transfer student from Japan disrupts a boarding school’s power structure with her gambling skills, challenging the Student Council while pursuing revenge that could overturn the entire system.”
Netflix’s Growing Collection of Live-Action Manga Adaptations
Netflix
Bet was developed by Simon Barry, who previously adapted the comic series Warrior Nun for Netflix. Warrior Nun ran for two seasons from 2020 to 2022, with Netflix, in a disappointing trend, canceling the popular series. A Warrior Nun feature film trilogy continuation is being developed without Netflix’s involvement. Barry’s other credits include the Canadian science fiction series Continuum and the cult-favorite horror-action series Van Helsing. Clearly, Bet is another successful win for Barry.
Bet is also the latest in a long line of live-action adaptations based on popular manga for Netflix. The streaming platform has seemingly cornered the market on adapting manga to live-action as in-house productions or by purchasing distribution rights. While the results have typically been mixed, with critically mocked adaptations like Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop, the streamer’s recent successes with One Piece have seemingly turned their fortunes around. Now with Bet, they have another hit on their hands.
It isn’t all good news for Bet, though. The series has faced a bit of backlash from fans of the original manga, claiming it has whitewashed the Asian-centric storyline by changing the setting and characters from the original work. So far, Netflix has given no indication of whether Bet will return for Season 2. Breaking into the Netflix Top 10 is a good start, but that doesn’t always guarantee a second series. If Bet does hold in the following weeks and gains more of an audience, Netflix would be foolish not to move forward with more seasons of the show.
