Doomsday’ Set Image Reveals Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Comic Inspiration

May 24, 2025

Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production, and the herculean effort from Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers continues to get teased by the film’s stacked, star-studded cast. This time, it’s Robert Downey Jr. sharing a new peek at the set of the highly-anticipated sequel, seemingly confirming which comic will inspire his interpretation of the iconic villain Doctor Doom.
Downey Jr. took to Instagram to share an image from the set of Avengers: Doomsday to show off his workplace setup. Along with some essentials, he brings with him the DOOM comic from 2024 by Sanford Greene and Jonathan Hickman. Of course, this will not be the only piece of source material that will serve as inspiration for his turn as the Avengers antagonist. However, it is telling that one of Marvel Comics’ most recent efforts is seemingly at the forefront of his creative mind. You can check out the social media post below.

Scarlett Johansson Thinks This MCU Epic Was Snubbed at the Oscars

“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?”

Although Avengers: Doomsday is easily Marvel Studios’ biggest project since Endgame was released in theaters in 2019, it seems the level of security on set is a bit more relaxed these days. In addition to set videos appearing online every day, the announced cast has been open about working on the movie and sharing images from the production. Simu Liu recently shared an image featuring the main cast of Doomsday, including members of the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. Meanwhile, Alan Cumming, who is reprising his role as Nightcrawler, revealed some plot details regarding his character and who the X-Men might be fighting in the event film.
What Is the ‘Doom’ (2024) Comic About?

The interesting thing to note about the comic Robert Downey Jr. is reading is that it was a one-shot, which means the story takes place over a single issue. Doom, released in April 2024, followed the villain as he is tasked with saving the Marvel Universe in the “near future” from Galactus. In order to do so, he acquires a new armor suit powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with the galaxy-eating villain. Now, it is unknown if Galactus will play some kind of role in Avengers: Doomsday, but there are some elements that could be used in the Russo Brothers film. Check out the plot synopsis for Doom:

“IN THE NEAR FUTURE…DOOM ALONE MUST SAVE THE MARVEL UNIVERSE! Legendary creators Jonathan Hickman (ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, G.O.D.S.) and Sanford Greene (Bitter Root) send Doctor Doom on a journey unlike any he has undertaken before! With Valeria Richards at his side, Doom goes on a quest to harness more power than any human has ever wielded before in order to try to stop Galactus from bringing about the death of the universe!”

Longtime fans of the MCU and Marvel Comics know that the company loves to have some corporate synergy between the two media. There is likely a reason that Doctor Doom seems intent on saving the Marvel Universe (or taking over it) in several recent storylines. In all likelihood, Avengers: Doomsday will have Doctor Doom concerned with saving the multiverse in some shape or form, and, in true MCU fashion, could be going about it the wrong way.
