‘Galaxy Quest’ Producer Confirms Series Script Is “Being Written”

Jun 1, 2025

Original Galaxy Quest producer Mark Johnson has indicated that when it comes to the long-awaited TV series based on the cult classic 1999 sci-fi comedy, fans should never give up, never surrender! It turns out that Grabthar’s hammer has not come down on the project yet, after years of being in development, which means there is still a glimmer of hope that the courageous crew of the NSEA Protector could bring another space adventure to our screens in the future, and we should remain on the lookout for further signs of life. Johnson has several projects in the works, including TV adaptations of Galaxy Quest and The Holdovers, which he tells Deadline “are being written, so we’ll see.” It may not be the most Earth-shattering update, especially since he didn’t reveal how far along they are with the script and this is one of many iterations that have been in development over the years (the most recent set up at Paramount+ in 2023), but it does confirm that it is still in progress. However, it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet and there may still be a way to go to lift it off the ground.

These are Some of the Funniest Sci-Fi TV Shows and Movies

Science fiction is a popular genre that lends itself to comedy, as well. Here, we take a look at some of the funniest sci-fi comedies in film and TV.

The idea of a Galaxy Quest series has been floating in space for some time now, and there have been several attempts to bring it to the small screen. Paul Scheer submitted drafts to Amazon Studios in 2017 for a serialized adventure that would start where the film ends, while Paramount Television Studios revealed in 2023 that they were wanting to turn Galaxy Quest from a fictional series into a real one. A straight-up sequel was also in the works at one stage, but the unexpected death of Alan Rickman understandably halted those plans.
Could ‘Galaxy Quest’ Work Without the Original Cast?

DreamWorks Pictures

Tim Allen, who starred in Galaxy Quest as has-been actor Jason Nesmith, who played Commander Peter Quincy Taggart in the movie’s fictional space-odyssey series, suggested in 2021 that there could possibly be a way to move forward with a follow-up project without Rickman’s involvement. “Without giving too much away, a member of Alan’s Galaxy Quest family could step in and the idea would still work,” Allen teased at the time, adding that, “There is constantly a little flicker of a butane torch that we could reboot it with.” Fellow Galaxy Quest star Sam Rockwell, who portrayed Guy Fleegman, asserted that the original film’s surviving ensemble would be up for another space adventure if it came to fruition. “It was a really lucky thing, that film. If there was a sequel to Galaxy Quest, we would be on it. We talked about it, maybe like a limited series,” he said, further noting, “Simon Pegg talked about helping with it, actually.” However, it has never been officially confirmed which members, if any, of the original cast would be involved with a revival project. It has been more than 25 years since Galaxy Quest hit theaters, but it remains a fan-favorite of the sci-fi genre. Dean Parisot directed the film from a script written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, telling the story of the alumni cast of a space opera TV series who find themselves drawn into a real intergalactic conflict with aliens. The aliens believe the series is a documentary and enlist the heroes to help them overcome the oppressive regime in their solar system. The movie received positive reviews from critics, but flew somewhat under the radar initially before gaining cult status and cementing itself as a modern comedy classic. Source: Deadline
