‘Superman’ Opening Weekend Could Shatter Warner Bros.’ ‘Harry Potter’ Record

Jun 7, 2025

Superman was never going to hit the box office with a small thud, but projections for James Gunn’s DCU live-action debut are set to fire up the summer with a potential record-breaking debut for the DC franchise. The summer is littered with some big franchise movies, including Jurassic World Rebirth on July 2, and Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, and right in the middle on July 11 is Superman. So how is the Man of Steel’s new iteration expected to fare? Very well indeed. According to projections by Box Office Theory, Superman is looking at a stratospheric rise through the ranks of DC box office history to not only claim the highest opening weekend haul for a Superman movie, or even the DC franchise, but could become Warner Bros. Discovery’s biggest movie opening ever. Currently, the DC record is held by Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opened to the tune of $166 million back in 2016, and just above that is WBD’s highest-grossing opener, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, with $169 million.

David Zaslav described these four characters as “big asset builders and big differentiators.”

If projections hold, Superman is going to take somewhere between $154-175 million, and with curiosity about just what Gunn can bring to the DC party building as the movie’s release approaches, there is every likelihood that the film could even surpass the high-end figure.
Why Is ‘Superman’ Expected to Break Records This Summer?

Warner Bros. Pictures

Based on the history of the DC franchise in recent years, it is not surprising that some people would be skeptical about the chances of any DC movie making a big impact on the box office again. However, with the complete change of command and direction for WBD’s DC output, there is plenty of optimism that this time around the franchise could finally put its past problems behind it. Reactions to Superman’s trailer were mostly positive – outside the expected dissent from those still angered over the loss of Henry Cavill – and the first full trailer released in December delivered in excess of 250 million views, the most of any Warner Bros. movie ever. In addition to this, Gunn’s previous work on Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad, as well as his Guardians of the Galaxy movies with Marvel Studios, have proven that he is one of the most capable filmmakers to deliver a visual effects spectacle with a lot of heart, plenty of fan-pleasing moments, and distinct vision. Will Superman become one of the most successful DC movies of all time? Could it even surpass the mighty Barbie to become Warner Bros. Pictures’ highest grossing movie of all time? Only time will tell, but it does have a better chance than almost every DC superhero offering of the last decade. Source: Box Office Theory
