James Gunn has written a lengthy note addressing the recent developments of the DCU, explaining that no amount of fan backlash will change plans.

The last few weeks have been a trying time for fans of the DCU with Henry Cavill and Black Adam both seeming to be out of the picture and a potential new, younger wave of Justice League characters on the horizon. It seems that James Gunn and Peter Safran have also been feeling pressure following the recent announcements. Gunn has now explained that the noise being made by a “minority of people” will not have any impact on the decisions that have to be made to get the franchise on a new track. He wrote on his Twitter account:
“One of the things Peter & I were aware of when we took the job as heads of DC Studios was a certain minority of people online that could be, well, uproarious & unkind, to say the least. Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. Perhaps these choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind. No one loves to be harassed or called names – but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions. We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us. But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.”

Countering Fan Complaints Has Been Part of the Job For James Gunn.
DC Studios/DC Comics
Since taking over as the joint CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn has been walking a Twitter tightrope between teasing the new DCU, preparing to end his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and responding to the many complaints about the collapse of the old DCEU. One of the main things to come from the comments is that Gunn is more than aware of the feelings around Henry Cavill’s departure in particular. He previously responded to one fan who called his handling of the situation cold, saying:
“I’m anything but cold about it. I sat down in person with Henry yesterday and we had a very open and honest and respectful discussion. We’ve communicated since and he and I are all good. And I said what I needed to say yesterday, not sure what else you’d like me to say.”
In the end, Warner Bros. Discovery were always done with Zack Snyder’s DCEU, and that meant it was likely that a complete reboot was on the cards. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam seemed to stoke the fires of false hope with its Superman cameo, something that hasn’t exactly smoothed the waters. However, Gunn and Safran have made it clear that they are sticking to their plans and whatever opinions are thrown their way, the new DCU will still make its debut in the next few years.
