David E. Kelley Shares Killer Update on Season 3 of Nicole Kidman’s HBO Series ‘Big Little Lies’

Jun 11, 2025

Fans of Big Little Lies, the HBO series with one of the best casts in modern television, we have got some good news for you. Showrunner David E. Kelley has teased the possible development of Season 3. This would mark the return of the drama series six years after Season 2 wrapped. News about a possible return has been scarce, but now Kelley reports that we could be going back to the “perfect” small town in Monterey, California. According to a report by People, Kelley, who also created The Undoing and Love & Death for HBO, spoke at the Gotham TV Awards about the possible return of the show. Although there’s nothing official about a possible revival, and HBO has not renewed the show, the showrunner said that everyone involved is “committed” to returning and making Season 3:
“We’re hoping it happens. We had a great time doing the first two seasons, and we all want to do it again. I think it’s a credit to Liane Moriarty, too, who wrote the original book. And she’s written another book that season 3 will be based on. It’s a pretty good collection of talent.
“You need to corral a lot of high-caliber talent and their publicists, but everyone is very committed to it. We haven’t really all gotten together to brainstorm yet, but again, it’s a great stable of talent. Once we do [get together], I think we have a good shot of figuring it out.”

Why Big Little Lies Should’ve Ended With Season One

Big Little Lies was planned as a limited series, but later added a second season. Here’s why that was a mistake.

Big Little Lies stars Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, and Laura Dern. It’s a no-brainer that the biggest difficulty lies in HBO’s ability to bring the cast together, as each must have their own packed schedule. Regardless, the last report we had was in June 2024, when Kidman addressed the inevitable return of the show. Judging by her past comments, it seems Kidman was onboard. The show follows a group of wealthy women living in a perfect California beach town who are united by a horrific crime. Per IMDb’s synopsis: “The apparently-perfect lives of upper-class mothers of students at a prestigious elementary school unravel to the point of murder when a single mother moves to their quaint California beach town.”
‘Big Little Lies’ Is One of HBO’s Best Drama Properties

HBO, 2017

Season 1 of Big Little Lies was based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty. The bestselling novel was brought to the small screen by director Jean-Marc Vallée and Kelley, who provided the scripts. The first season arrived in 2017, and received instant acclaim. It still holds a 93% score on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score sitting slightly higher at 95%. Season 1 was also critically acclaimed and well-received on the awards circuit. It won a total of eight Emmys and three Golden Globes, including the top award for Best Miniseries in both ceremonies. Season 2 of the show was greenlit by HBO after the first entry became very popular among HBO viewers. Moriarty was able to come up with a novella to follow up on the events of the first season. Meryl Streep joined the nearly-perfect cast as a mother seeking justice for the murder of her son. Although it was also very popular, it didn’t win any awards in the most important categories. Season 2 is also Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critics’ score of 85%, and an audience score of 83%. Source: People
