Jun 16, 2025
In February 2025, it was announced that CBS had ordered a spinoff for its beloved police drama Blue Bloods, with Donnie Wahlberg slated to reprise his role as the tough-as-nails Danny Reagan in the follow-up series Boston Blue. The show will focus on Danny as the former NYPD detective takes a position at the Boston Police Department for a new career adventure, where he becomes partners with the city’s rising star Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). Since the news first broke, Boston Blue has been acquiring quite the stacked cast, with famous faces like Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, Gloria Reuben, and Marcus Scribner all signing on for the exciting spinoff. Now, prominent TV director Anthony Hemingway has been revealed to be helming the pilot episode of Boston Blue, which bodes well for the overall success of the series. Let’s take a closer look at the spinoff and Hemingway’s illustrious resume.

What Can Fans Expect From ‘Boston Blue’?
CBS
After 14 seasons of hunting down dangerous criminals and keeping the streets of New York City safe, Detective Danny Reagan is ready to conquer new territory and is heading to Boston to start a fresh chapter in the police drama Boston Blue. The Walking Dead and Star Trek: Discovery alum Sonequa Martin-Green will be appearing as Danny’s new partner in the BPD, Lena Silver, a character that has been described as a “rising star” in the city and who is the daughter of Boston’s district attorney Mae Silver (ER’s Gloria Reuben).

Danny Reagan’s next chapter awaits…
Psych’s Maggie Lawson is slated to portray Lena’s Superintendent stepsister, Maggie Lawson, while Black-ish’s Marcus Scribner has recently been cast as the youngest Silver sibling, rookie patrol cop Jonah Silver. Filling the void of Tom Selleck’s beloved character, Frank Reagan, is Hollywood veteran Ernie Hudson, who will play Silver family patriarch Reverend Peters, the renowned pastor of a historic Baptist Church and someone who is “an open-minded, welcoming man that is comfortable in all traditions.” Only time will tell whether or not Selleck or any other Blue Bloods stars appear in the upcoming spinoff, but based on the cast alone, the series is looking very promising.
The ‘Boston Blue’ Pilot Is in Very Capable Hands
CBS
Both eager and skeptical fans of Blue Bloods will be relieved to learn that the pilot episode of Boston Blue is being directed and produced by Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Anthony Hemingway, who has famously helmed episodes for a slew of small-screen hits throughout his decorated career. Hemingway is perhaps best known for his work on acclaimed shows like Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., The Wire, Treme, Empire, and The News Room, and he has also directed multiple episodes of both CSI: New York and CSI: Miami, proving he has a lot of experience in the police procedural genre.

In 2016, Hemingway received both an Emmy, NAACP Image Award, and Golden Globe for his impressive contributions to the FX smash hit series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, in which he served as both executive producer and director, helming five episodes in the anthology original. For Boston Blue, Hemingway will be collaborating with writing/producing duo Brandon Sonnier & Brandon Margolis (aptly known as “The Brandons”), who have previously worked together on The Blacklist, L.A.’s Finest, and S.W.A.T. After Blue Bloods was surprisingly canceled after 14 seasons (much to the dismay of fans and Tom Selleck himself), many were left wondering if that was the end of the famous Reagan family and their endless devotion to law enforcement. Thankfully, their legacy and crusade for justice will continue on in Boston Blue with Danny Reagan as the show’s main driving force, and we can only hope that more members of the Reagan clan will pop up and join the detective as he begins a new adventure in Boston. Stream Blue Bloods on Paramount+. Boston Blue premieres in the fall on CBS.
