How To Train Your Dragon Box Office Hits Huge Milestone In Week 2, Climbs Even Higher Up 2025 Top 10
Jun 23, 2025
The live-action How To Train Your Dragon remake is dominating the box office for a second straight weekend. Led by Mason Thames (Hiccup), Nico Parker (Astrid), and Toothless the dragon, the movie serves as a faithful adaptation of the 2010 animated blockbuster. Dean DeBlois, who directed the original trilogy, returned as the director and is already involved in the active development of a How To Train Your Dragon 2 remake. This adaptation had a $150 million budget, and it is already on its way to success. After ruling the box office for two weeks, the remake has officially achieved a new milestone, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It has reportedly earned an astounding $160.5 million domestically and $197.7 million overseas for a combined total of $358.2 million. Having already crossed the $350 million milestone, it has already passed Final Destination: Bloodlines to become the eighth-highest-grossing movie of the year. Sinners and Thunderbolts* stand just ahead at $362.9 million and $381 million respectively, which How To Train Your Dragon should pass with ease next weekend.
What This Milestone Means For How To Train Your Dragon
Profitability Should Come Next Weekend
Since How To Train Your Dragon had a $150 million budget, it will need approximately $375 million to become a success. While it has not officially crossed that threshold yet, it is only a matter of time, as it should easily reach the $375 million milestone by the end of next weekend. This week, audiences have generally been choosing to flock to this remake, as opposed to seeing Pixar’s latest animated adventure, Elio. DreamWorks partly benefited from its control over Imax screens, which should end next weekend as F1 debuts on June 27.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 has already been scheduled for June 11, 2027.
In an increasingly tumultuous box office, reaching profitability in just three weeks is a major accomplishment, especially when facing strong competition. This movie debuted against Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Lilo & Stitch, and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, and it excelled all the same. It is a massive accomplishment for DreamWorks, especially as this is the studio’s first live-action adaptation. While Disney’s live-action remakes have proven the potential of these movies, it is impressive to see DreamWorks master it so quickly.
Our Take On How To Train Your Dragon’s Success
This Is The Age Of Remakes
While Disney did stumble recently with Snow White (2025), the 2010s and 2020s have been an age of adaptations and remakes. After thrilling audiences with Hiccup’s story in a beloved trilogy, it should come as no surprise that DreamWorks would be able to replicate Disney’s initial remake success. While it is disappointing that original content is no longer as much of a priority in Hollywood, despite Sinners’ profitability, the live-action How To Train Your Dragon will likely inspire more DreamWorks remakes in the coming years, especially given this level of box office success.
