Hulu’s Epic Freedom Series Starring Sterling K. Brown Premieres July 2

In early July, Hulu is releasing quite the compelling series, “Washington Black,” which boasts Oscar-nominee Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”) as the show’s star and executive producer.
A new trailer for the series shows off an epic angle exploring the life of Wash, born into slavery at a sugar plantation in Barbados, who seeks a life of freedom after fleeing the West Indies. Easier said than done in the era of slavery, as Wash continues his globetrotting adventures on the run.

The rest of the cast in the ambitious streaming series includes Ernest Kingsley Jr., Rupert Graves, Iola Evans, Edward Bluemel, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Eddie Karanja, and Tom Ellis.
“Washington Black,” based on the work of Canadian author Esi Edugyan, hails from showrunners Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Kimberly Ann Harrison. Brown, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Wanuri Kahiu, Mo Marable, Rob Seidenglanz, Jeremy Bell, Lindsay Williams, D.J. Goldberg, Jennifer Johnson, Anthony Hemingway, Hinds, and Harrison comprise the producing team.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, Washington Black follows the 19th-century odyssey of George Washington “Wash” Black, an eleven-year-old boy born on a Barbados sugar plantation, whose prodigious scientific mind sets him on a path of unexpected destiny.
