The Way Of Water, Nope Top Visual Effects Oscar Shortlist
Mar 6, 2023
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the Oscar shortlists today and the Visual Effects and Sound categories saw some surprises. While films such as “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “NOPE” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” were expected in Visual Effects, “Thirteen Lives” was not. Moreover, the Sound category inexplicably snubbed “Nope.”

One film that made the Sound category, but didn’t make the VFX cut was “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” “RRR,” the Best Picture nominee hopeful that landed an Original Song placement, did not get recognized in either Visual Effects or, more shockingly, Sound.
Overall, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” led all shortlist mentions with five each. “Avatar: The Way of Water” earned four while “The Batman,” “Babylon,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” had three each. “Nope,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “Elvis” scored two each.
The films that made the Visual Effects shortlist are as follows:
“All Quiet on the Western Front”
“Avatar: The Way of Water”
“The Batman”
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”
“Jurassic World Dominion”
“Nope”
“Thirteen Lives”
“Top Gun: Maverick”
The films that made the shortlist for Best Sound are as follows:
