Theo Rossi Hints At A New ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Project Featuring Cast From The Original Series

Mar 6, 2023

Though it never won any major awards, FX’s long-running “Sons of Anarchy” is one of the most popular series to ever grace the cable network. In fact, the show’s recent spinoff, “Mayans M.C.,” is one of the best spinoffs in recent memory and easily one of the most underrated series on TV today. So, even though there are plenty of people out there who want to write off the ‘Sons’ franchise as macho biker bullshit, that is not even close to representing the legacy of the series or just how great the storytelling was. All that to say, with ‘Mayans’ coming to an end this year, fans of “Sons of Anarchy” have been desperate for more information about where the franchise might be going next. Thankfully, Theo Rossi is here to tease a new project reuniting the ‘Sons’ cast.

Speaking at a recent event celebrating “Emily the Criminal” (via Deadline), one of the stars of that film, Theo Rossi, hinted that there might be a return to a series that really put him on the map— “Sons of Anarchy.” However, he fell short of explaining what exactly is being worked on that would serve as a reunion for the ensemble cast of the FX motorcycle drama.
“There might be something coming up where we’re all back together, which is insane,” Rossi said. “If it happens, it’s wild, but if it doesn’t, it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day.”
Rossi was then asked if it meant there was a “Sons of Anarchy” movie in development, the actor smiled and said, “It’s totally different. It’s really cool.”

The original ‘Sons’ series ended after seven seasons and provided a pretty definitive ending for the story of Jax Teller (played by Charlie Hunnam). Since then, other than “Mayans M.C.,” there was a report that series creator Kurt Sutter was exploring a prequel series set decades before ‘Sons.’ That show eventually fell apart during development. That said, quite a few actors from the original ‘Sons’ series have shown up in various forms on “Mayans M.C.” keeping up hope for a legit reunion.
Of course, it’d be naive to talk about a potential new ‘Sons’ project without mentioning the elephant in the room, Kurt Sutter. The controversial creator has always stoked flames and happily embraced his bad boy image, but it appeared to go too far when he left ‘Mayans’ a few years ago and was seemingly exiled from the ‘Sons’ franchise. It’s unclear if Sutter would be welcomed back for a new ‘Sons’ project or if perhaps ‘Mayans’ co-creator and showrunner, Elgin James, might be willing to do something else in the franchise. Regardless, without Sutter’s involvement, it does seem like a difficult sell for fans of the original series.
There is still an outside chance that Rossi is talking about something else entirely. Instead of a new project, we could also be looking at a reunion in ‘Mayans.’ We don’t know where the final season is heading, but a convergence of the Mayans gang and the Sons of Anarchy seems inevitable. Perhaps, Rossi and his cohorts are just showing up for a bit of an extended run on the upcoming season of ‘Mayans?’
We’ll just have to sit back and wait to see what happens. Regardless, if you’re missing the awesomeness that is “Mayans M.C.” or “Sons of Anarchy,” you can get a taste of those shows below:
