Mackenzie Davis & Josh Hartnett To Lead Netflix’s Newfoundland-Set Limited Series Featuring A Mysterious Sea Creature

Jul 3, 2025

Canadian actress Mackenzie Davis is gearing up to make a return home to shoot a new untitled Netflix limited series set in a remote Newfoundland fishing town, starring opposite Josh Hartnett.
The new project revealed by Deadline hails from creator and showrunner Jesse McKeown (“The Umbrella Company”) alongside the key detail that Hartnett plays a world-warry fisherman who faces a threat from a “mysterious sea creature,” adding what sounds like a genre aspect and could be a great hook for a series set in a small town.

Harntnett was most recently seen in FX‘s acclaimed restaurant drama “The Bear,” “Fight or Flight,” M. Night Shyamalan‘s Toronto-shot serial killer thriller “Trap,” and Christopher Nolan‘s Oscar-winning atomic bomb drama, “Oppenheimer.”
Davis, of course, is no stranger to the world of genre projects, making a career with roles in things such as “Black Mirror,” “Station Eleven,” “Terminator: Dark Fate,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “The Martian,” and the recent horror thriller “Speak No Evil” from “Clayface” director James Watkins.
This won’t be the first time Mackenzie Davis has worked with Netflix either, as she appeared on their upcoming crime noir series “The Undertow” and lent her voice for Tim Miller and David Fincher‘s animated anthology series, “Love, Death & Robots.”
UPDATE: “Stranger Things” actor Charlie Heaton has also joined the six-part miniseries, according to a report from Deadline.

Filming is said to be taking place on location in Newfoundland, the notable East Coast province of Canada, known for its generations of fishing communities/traditions. Having been previously used as a filming locale for David Lowery‘s “Peter Pan & Wendy” and James Wan‘s “Aquaman.” We’ll patiently wait for more casting, the show’s official title, and more plot details for the limited series.
