Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Tops the HBO Max Streaming Chart After Box Office Success

Jul 8, 2025

There are certain movies that come along and defy all expectations, and in 2025, that honor went to Ryan Coogler’s amazing vampire film, Sinners. Now, it is no surprise that the Michael B. Jordan-led period horror movie has sunk its teeth into the HBO Max streaming chart after debuting on the platform on July 4. Sinners became a box office sensation when it was released in cinemas in April, very quickly turning from a middling horror offering to a movie that everyone wanted to see. Before its release, Sinners was expected to post reasonable box office numbers, but instead it shattered every projection to become a chart-topping winner that turned its $90 million budget into a $365 million worldwide haul.

Ryan Coogler’s latest landed the biggest opening for an original film in six years, topping not one, but two Jordan Peele horror hits.

On top of that, Sinners registered some impressive Rotten Tomatoes scores as well. In a rare moment of unity, critics and audiences were singing from the same hymn sheet by delivering 97% and 96% scores, respectively. Now, after more success as a VOD title, the film is proving a big crowd-pleaser on streaming as well.
Will ‘Sinners’ Get a Sequel?

Warner Bros.

Any movie that gains the kind of success that Sinners has been enjoying doesn’t take long to become the subject of talk about sequel opportunities. In a recent conversation with Ebony magazine, director Ryan Coogler opened up about his original plans for Sinners, which did not involve a possible sequel. “I never think about that,” Coogler said when asked about the next chapter in Sinner’s story. While the director had been part of some big franchises, including Black Panther and Creed, it seems that this little story of vampires was never meant to follow the likes of Twilight into franchise territory.
“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.
I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrées and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”
Sinners has gained enough interest to make the idea of a sequel seem like a no-brainer to studio bosses, but whether it happens or not will really just depend on if there is a story to tell that Coogler and the rest of the team think is worth telling. The film acts as a self-contained story, with no connections to other movies, and an ending that satisfies in a way that makes it seem foolish to try and follow it without good reason. While that debate goes on, Sinners is now more accessible than ever, and clearly many people have been taking the opportunity to acquaint themselves with Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore, both played by Michael B. Jordan, and a host of Mississippi vampires. You really should invite them in yourself. Source: FlixPatrol
