The Walking Dead: Dead City has revealed a new teaser, and a reason for Maggie and Negan’s unexpected team-up.

AMC

The Walking Dead: Dead City arrives on AMC this June, and as the first spin-off from the main Walking Dead series, it has a lot to prove when it comes to ratings. Ever since it was announced, Dead City has had fans scratching their heads about one thing in particular; why would Maggie want to team up with Negan and head off to New York? Now a new trailer has revealed exactly why Maggie may not like Negan, but she needs him.

A new teaser shared by the official Walking Dead Twitter page and a behind-the-scenes clip shared by Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan has revealed exactly why the pair of once-sworn enemies are thrown together in the new series. The show’s focus will be Maggie and Negan’s attempts to save Hershel, Maggie’s son, who is seemingly kidnapped. As Maggie, played once again by Lauren Cohan, attempts to rescue her son, she is heard saying that she needs Negan because he is the only person who can help. The short teaser then shows walkers in the streets of New York, Negan being the action anti-hero self and the first real sense of jeopardy seen in the franchise for a long time. Check out the new videos below.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan Became One Of the Most Loved Characters of the Walking Dead

AMC

While Negan arrived in The Walking Dead as the big bad everyone loved to hate, which is understandable when his debut saw him brutally killing two of the show’s popular characters, over the years, the character has developed into one of the series biggest draws. Now fans will see Negan taking center stage along with Cohan’s Maggie, but it could have all been very different if Morgan had stuck to the original plan for his Walking Dead character. He previously said:

“I think, originally, it was gonna be three years. I think that was [the plan]. I had a conversation with Scott [Gimple, executive producer and former showrunner], and it was like, ‘You gotta be on it for at least three years if you want to be a part of this show.’ I was like, ‘That seems like a long time.’ Little did I know that eight years later or whatever, we’d still be here. That eight years has gone by like that. Like that. I can’t believe that we’re here and celebrating the end of this show as we know it. It’s unbelievable to me. There’s been so many kind of iterations of this show through the years, losing people, having people come back.”

Now the extended stay of Morgan has paid off for fans. Having watched Negan go from arch-villain to morally-dubious hero, Dead City now gives Negan another chance to atone for his sins while seemingly continuing to smash a few heads together in the process. What more could anyone ask for from the continuation of The Walking Dead franchise?
