‘3 Body Problem’ Adds New Cast Members to Season 2

Aug 5, 2025

Someone notify the “Oxford Five” because we just got a new exciting update about Netflix’s hit sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. What’s on Netflix reported that two leads and two recurring characters have been added to the ensemble cast for season two. According to the streamer, Claudia Doumit (SOULM8TE, The Boys) is set to play Captain Van Rijn, while Ellie de Lange (Run Away, Wolf Hall and The Serpent) will take on the role of Ayla. But that’s not all. The streaming service also revealed that Alfie Allen (Atomic, Game of Thrones, SAS Rogue Heroes), David Yip (The Chinese Detective, A View to a Kill), and Jordan Sunshine (The Pitt Season 2, Wonder Pets) are joining as recurring characters. With the fate of the Earth hanging in the balance, the “Oxford Five” could use all the help they could get. Don’t worry, 3 Body Problem fans, many of the cast members that you were introduced to in season one of the mind-bending sci-fi series are expected to come back for the second installment, including Jess Hong as Jin, Benedict Wong as Da Shi, Eiza González as Auggie, Jovan Adepo as Saul, Saamer Usmani as Raj, Liam Cunningham as Wade, Marlo Kelly as Tatiana, Sea Shimooka as Sophon and Josh Brener as Kent. This casting news comes shortly after Netflix confirmed that Emmy-award-winning Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon director Miguel Sapochnik is reuniting with 3 Body Problem creators (and fellow GOT alums) David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with Alexander Woo, to produce and direct multiple episodes in the upcoming season. And guess what? House of the Dragon cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt and Thrones director Jeremy Podeswa are also joining Season 2. At this point, the set of the 3 Body Problem is just one big Thrones reunion in the making — and we’re so here for it. Back in July, we reported that 3 Body Problem Seasons 2 and 3 have officially entered production. That same month, photos from the set started popping up on social media, including one that showed Benedict Wong and Jess Hong (who play Clarence “Da” Shi and Dr. Jin Cheng, respectively) taking part in a table read. It has also been reported that production has started in Budapest, Hungary. Very little has been revealed about the plot of Season 2. For now, all we know is that 3 Body Problem’s new season will delve into the following: “As the alien invasion nears, humanity prepares — on Earth and elsewhere.” Way to keep the suspense, Netflix.
Has Netflix Confirmed a Release Date for ‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2?

Though a release date hasn’t been revealed for 3 Body Problem Season 2, production is currently underway, which leads us to believe the next installment will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2026. Following the show’s renewal, it was reported that Season 2 and Season 3 will be filmed back-to-back, leading some fans to speculate that 3 Body Problem Season 3 will premiere sometime in 2027. Last year, Netflix confirmed that the series will end with these new seasons. Based on the bestselling “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” book trilogy by Liu Cixin, 3 Body Problem begins in 1960s China, where one person’s decision impacts the future. Fast-forward to the present day, a group of brilliant scientists join forces with a determined detective to save humanity. Upon its debut, 3 Body Problem became an instant hit among Netflix viewers. According to Deadline, Season 1 of the series spent a total of three weeks on Netflix’s Top 10 Shows list and seven weeks on the Netflix Global Top 10, where it reached the Top 10 in 93 countries. The first season of 3 Body Problem is streaming now on Netflix. Source: What’s on Netflix, Deadline
