The Apple TV+ Musical Comedy Takes On ‘Chicago’

Mar 7, 2023

Can a change of scenery save a relationship? That is the question at the heart of “Schmigadoon!” The Apple TV+ musical comedy placed a couple — played by Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong — into their very own magical world. What followed, in Season 1, was a search to find love again, all while living through a barrage of musical numbers. The project parodies the classic musical “Brigadoon” — which was adapted into the Gene Kelly-led film.

Season 2 takes on the most recognizable characteristics of ‘60s and ‘70s musicals. New musical moments are not the only additions to “Schmigadoon!” — much of the series’ appeal comes from its impressive cast. “That talent makes it enough of a breezy diversion that it feels like Anton Ego in a crowded theater of clapping fans to come down on it too hard,” wrote The Playlist’s Brian Tallerico. Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page are set to join the already celebrated cast. For Burgess, the role represents a return to musicals — having starred in some of the ’00s most famous and critically-acclaimed offerings.
