‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Gets Theatrical Release as Netflix Pushes an Oscar Campaign

Aug 12, 2025

In light of the animated movie’s massive success, Netflix is taking Kpop Demon Hunters to the next level. Today, the streamer announced that fans will be able to gather inside a movie theater to share their love for the new movie in a special sing-along version. There’s a catch, though: the theatrical release will be in event-like fashion, making the screenings available for one weekend only — it will play in U.S. and Canada screens on August 23 and 24. Tickets go on sale as early as tomorrow. Ever since its premiere in late June, Kpop Demon Hunters has skyrocketed to the top of the Netflix charts. It rose all the way to rank among the most-streamed titles ever on the platform, currently at #4 with roughly 158 million views. In the animated movies department, it is already the streamer’s most-watched movie ever. Not by chance, the movie is entering its eighth week among the top 10 most-watched movies, a list that Netflix unveils weekly. The choice to make a sing-along theatrical release of Kpop Demon Hunters is not random. The movie features a slate of catchy songs that took its soundtrack all the way to #2 on the Billboard 200 chart last weekend — according to Netflix, the movie’s soundtrack has already accumulated over 3 billion global streams until now. The songs are performed by real K-pop stars such as EJAE, AUDREY NUNA, REI AMI, Andrew Choi, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee, Neckwav, and Lea Salonga.
‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ Songs Are A Standout

Last week, TWICE made the live debut of the movie’s soundtrack at Lollapalooza — an occasion made even more special due to the fact that they are the first K-pop girl group ever to integrate the lineup of the music event. As any K-drama fan will tell you, there is no escaping South Korean culture. The country is taking over all segments of entertainment by releasing high-profile shows like Squid Game and making history at the Oscars with movies like Parasite. The success of Kpop Demon Hunters is backed up by critics: aside from being a hugely popular adventure, the movie landed a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Collider’s Jeff Ewing called the movie “unmissable” and praised its worldbuilding elements in his 8/10 review:
“It boasts interesting lore around demons, music, and hunters, which is novel yet feels rich. It could surely be mined for other stories. The demon designs are visually distinct and detailed, and the combat is stylish, well-choreographed, and nicely edited and timed. It should be noted that this reviewer isn’t a massive K-pop listener, but I still found the in-world songs to be catchy and well-produced.”
The sing-along theatrical release of Kpop Demon Hunters will take place on August 23 and 24.
