‘Blade Runner 2099’ to Premiere on Prime Video in 2026
Aug 25, 2025
Blade Runner fans who have been longing to return to the world of replicants and runners don’t have too much longer to wait. Amazon has shared a release update for Blade Runner 2099, Prime Video’s highly anticipated limited series follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 critical hit Blade Runner 2049, which in itself is a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. The small-screen sequel starring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer has been eagerly awaited since it was announced in 2022, but the stage is now set for its premiere. Blade Runner 2099 will premiere on Prime Video in 2026, per a report from Deadline that states that Laura Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios, provided a long-awaited update on the series in an internal memo shared within the company. The document didn’t disclose an exact date for when the show would be made available on the streaming service, but 2026 marks nine years since the previous Blade Runner installment with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford hit screens. The series has faced several delays and setbacks along the way, with the dual strikes of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) causing significant disruption to the production schedule. However, cameras eventually started rolling, and filming wrapped on Blade Runner 2099 in December 2024, which only added to the anticipation of a release date being announced, as the project entered post-production, aka the final stage before its debut.
What Is ‘Blade Runner 2099’ About?

All entries in the Blade Runner franchise are adapted from Philip K. Dick’s seminal sci-fi novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 is set to jump further into the future, with a story that unfolds 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. Yeoh stars as a replicant named Olwen who is nearing the end of her life when she crosses paths with Schafer’s character Cora, a fugitive whose flight from justice forces her to undertake multiple personalities in a desperate bid to secure a sustainable future for her brother. The cast of Blade Runner 2099 also features Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, and Daniel Rigby, with Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi among the recurring stars. One member of the ensemble previously compared the series to the original ’80s film and, while some fans will be pleased to hear that the franchise is returning to its roots, others may have expected it to follow in 2049’s footsteps, especially given the amount of time that is supposed to have passed in-universe, so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out when it finally releases next year.
Blade Runner 2099 will premiere on Prime Video in 2026.
