Tom Cruise’s Ambitious Space Movie Gets an Update From ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Director

Sep 3, 2025

Tom Cruise is on a roll with the successful completion of the high-octane, action-packed Mission: Impossible franchise. The actor, known for his iconic action roles and death-defying stunts, will next be seen in Alejandro Iñárritu’s untitled film, details of which are kept tightly under wraps. Cruise’s other film, which was announced but hasn’t received an update since, is a Doug Liman-directed space-based film. Finally, the director has broken his silence about the project. The ambitious untitled project created a lot of waves when the actor-director team-up was announced for a SpaceX project, allowing the star to hold the title of the first civilian to perform a spacewalk. In a new interview, when inquired about the movie, Liman revealed, “I’ve just finished this [Asteroid] so I’m now processing what next and what I learned, part of it will be how the audience reacts to it. You’d rather I give you more concrete answers but you’re getting me totally raw… I don’t know where it leaves me. I know I want to do more in space… I am more excited about this idea of characters who have no business of going into space after making this. In the way, I was excited after The Bourne Identity, “ said Liman.
What’s Holding Tom Cruise’s Space Movie?

While there are ample sci-fi movies that tell brilliant, humane tales set in space, like Interstellar, Gravity, The Martian, and more, but none of them are actually shot in space, given Cruise’s penchant for doing stunts on his own, fans are excited for him to shoot in space, which in itself is a big task. Liman revealed that he is “more excited about going to space, not less … but our goal is to make something great.” He explained,
A lot of people are trying to do gimmicky things like, ‘Oh, it’s in space.’ I’m not interested in doing something that’s a just promotional gimmick. I want to make a film that people watch in a hundred years when maybe there’s hundreds of movies shot in outer space and there’s nothing special about it being in outer space. That’s the goal of everything I do.”
Both Liman and Cruise have been busy with their work, and undoubtedly, they would want to tell a story that is more than a spectacle. And for good things, fans wait. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
