Finney Actor Reveals Gwen’s Whispered Secret

Spoilers for The Black Phone and Black Phone 2
Black Phone 2, starring Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw, was released in theaters earlier this year, but everyone is still wondering the same thing about the ending: What did Gwen whisper to Finney during their final moments onscreen? In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns for Black Phone 2, Thames (known for his role as Finney) explained what Finney may have heard during the final moments in Black Phone 2. Despite many theories that could indicate or signal a potential third installment to the franchise, Thames clarified, “There weren’t any” lines being spoken to him. Thames stated:
“That’s what I love about it is it really leaves it up to the audience, “What did she really say?” I feel like I know what she said, and my reaction off of it is kind of what I pictured. That’s what I loved about it is there weren’t any lines. So I could just imagine exactly what Finney needed to hear, and I let him hear it, and it was great. It was a good moment to let Finn have that.”
Black Phone 2 follows the first installment released in 2021, which follows 13-year-old Finney who gets abducted by sadistic masked killer, The Grabber (played by Hawke). With the help of past victims, Finney has to learn how to adapt, survive, and escape from The Grabber’s clutches. The sequel focuses more on Finney’s 15-year-old sister Gwen (played by McGraw), who wakes in the night with disturbing visions of three boys as they are stalked and murdered in a desolate winter camp. With the help of her brother, she heads to the camp to confront the demon haunting the winter camp, The Grabber.
Black Phone 2 is now available to buy or rent at home.
During the final moments of Black Phone 2, Gwen and Finney finally rid themselves of The Grabber, and Gwen can communicate with her deceased mother. As Gwen leaves the phone booth, she rushes over to Finn and whispers unintelligibly, leaving a lot of questions unanswered for the viewer.

It was revealed throughout the movie, Gwen and Finn’s mother was also able to commune with spirits, which ultimately led her to The Grabber and her tragic demise. While it is unclear what was said to Finn, it could potentially lead to more installments in the franchise. Black Phone is based on Stephen King’s son Joe Hill’s short story, released in 2007. It’s not truly certain if they will continue the franchise, but Black Phone 2’s success at the box office may be enough motivation, as it grossed over $123 million, making it one of Blumhouse’s most successful films.
