‘Cassandra’ Is a Perfect Way to Binge 5 Hours on Netflix This Weekend
Dec 1, 2025
Cassandra was released in February 2025 and became an instant hit on Netflix after it scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, as the year heads to a close, the series is still the most-viewed sci-fi TV series of the year on the platform, outperforming another dystopian series, Black Mirror, by almost nine million views. The German limited series was written and directed by Benjamin Gutsche, and the show centers on a family that moves into a smart home that’s been uninhabited for the last 50 years. Their presence in the house awakens a domestic robot named Cassandra, which was developed in the 1970s. The titular robot is determined to keep the family in the home and does everything possible to prevent them from leaving. A timely warning of AI dangers wrapped in the shell of a psychological thriller, the hit series stars Lavinia Wilson, Mina Tander, Michael Klammer, Franz Hartwig, Joshua Kantara, Mary Tölle, Elias Grünthal, Filip Schnack, Pina Kühr, and Michel Koch. With just six episodes, all running for just under an hour, Cassandra is made for binge-watching and many of those discovering it back at the beginning of the year did just that to send it soaring up the Netflix chart against competition from shows with far more episodes. With each episode pulling viewers into the next, ramping up the intensity until the series conclusion, the show has remained the most watched sci-fi series on Netflix without being really challenged.
‘Cassandra’ Taps Into AI Fears in 2025
In 2025, artificial intelligence consistently finds itself at the center of controversy. Some people applaud the technological advances of the 21st century, while others are afraid of what this means overall for the future. There seem to be no limitations to AI, as people can easily impersonate others, create music with their favorite musician’s vocals, or professional filmmakers can use it to adjust an actor’s ability to speak a foreign language. Cassandra takes AI to an extreme that most people have thought of, and it’s a reality that one day seems possible. The addition of sci-fi and horror elements enhances the concerns that people have regarding this new technology, but like all things, it can be used for good and bad. While some reviews from critics noted that Cassandra often taps into the same tropes covered by previous entries in the “evil-AI” sub-genre, the minor note was not enough for any of them to give a “rotten” rating to the series. Called a “thrilling ride from start to finish,” as well as “sad and haunting” in a modern world that is becoming obsessed with AI technology in all its forms. Make room in your schedule to add Cassandra to your viewing list, and you won’t be sorry to have binged your way through the entire series in one sitting to discover why this is the best sci-fi series to have been released on Netflix in 2025.
