Gerard Butler’s $40 Million Sleeper Hit That Critics Despised Finds Redemption on Streaming

Dec 7, 2025

Gerard Butler’s next action movie storms into theaters in just over a month, but ahead of its arrival, one of his essential action hits has become a streaming success. Six years ago, Butler played Mike Banning for the third time in Angel Has Fallen, the conspiracy action threequel following the Secret Service agent with his back against the wall when he’s framed for murder. Not long ago, Angel Has Fallen began streaming on Netflix in America and around the world, where the film has crept into the top 10 and been a steady sleeper hit for over 25 days now. The third installment in Butler’s Fallen franchise failed to find its niche with critics, who rated it a Rotten 38% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. However, similar to the first two movies, it was a massive hit among fans. Not only did it earn a Verified Hot 93% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, but it also grossed $146 million at the box office against a relatively modest $40 million budget. The film was a major financial hit as a result of its low production costs. Morgan Freeman and the late Lance Reddick can also be seen in the film. Robert Mark Kamen, Matt Cook, Creighton Rothenberger, and Katrin Benedikt all wrote the script for Angel Has Fallen, and Ric Roman Waugh directed the action picture; he also made contributions to the script. Waugh recently reunited with Gerard Butler for Greenland, the disaster thriller that co-stars Morena Baccarin. The duo will team up once more for its sequel, Greenland: Migration, which is coming to theaters on January 9. Waugh and Butler even worked together on the 2023 action hit, Kandahar.
What Is Gerard Butler’s Highest-Grossing Movie?

Gerard Butler’s highest-grossing movie is the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, which just released earlier this year. The film grossed $636 million at the global box office, even overtaking the animated sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2. Other than How to Train Your Dragon, Butler’s highest-grossing live-action movie is 300, the historical action epic directed by Zack Snyder. 300 grossed $454 million at the box office and is widely known as the movie that turned Butler into a massive action star. His critically panned sci-fi thriller, Geostorm, also grossed $223 million at the global box office in 2017. Be sure to watch Angel Has Fallen on Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
