16 Years Later, Jason Statham’s Overlooked Action Sequel Is a Sleeper Hit on Streaming

Dec 12, 2025

Jason Statham is gearing up for a busy year with three new releases expected in 2026, but before his new movies hit the big screen, one of Statham’s older action films has become a massive streaming sensation. In 2009, Statham reprised his role as Chev Chelios in Crank: High Voltage, the sequel to his 2006 action film that grossed $42 million at the box office against a $12 million budget. Crank: High Voltage follows Chev as he faces a Chinese mobster who has stolen his indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered one that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep running. In America, Crank: High Voltage is streaming on Prime Video, and it’s also available for rent on various VOD platforms. However, the film is streaming on Starz globally, where it’s one of the top 10 most popular movies for the platform around the world. Crank: High Voltage was met with a stronger critical reception, enough to earn a 64% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes — the original film earned a 62%. Audiences weren’t hot on Crank 2, though, and rated it a Rotten 49% on the Popcornmeter. It also grossed less at the box office on almost double the budget, which effectively ended the franchise. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor wrote and directed Crank: High Voltage, which is the same duo that introduced the first film three years prior. The same year that Crank: High Voltage hit theaters, the duo also brought Gamer to the big screen. The forgotten psychological thriller stars Gerard Butler and Dexter’s Michael C. Hall, and it’s currently streaming for free on Pluto TV in America.
What New Movies Does Jason Statham Have Coming Out in 2026?

Jason Statham will begin the year in 2026 with Shelter, an action thriller that will be released in theaters on January 30. The first trailer for the film was just released last week. Statham will also star in another actioner, currently titled Mutiny, which will be released later in the year, in August. Details about the film are being held under wraps for now. He’ll finish the year by reprising his role as Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2. The film just wrapped production a few weeks ago, and while it’s still without an official launch date, it’s expected before the end of 2026. Be sure to watch Crank: High Voltage on Prime Video in America and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
