Dustin Hoffman and Leo Woodall Team Up in First Trailer for High-Stakes Heist Thriller With a Twist
Jan 22, 2026
Cinema is in no way hurting for a good heist movie. From more modern titles like David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water to older classics such as Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon, the genre is saturated with instant hits that have withstood the test of time. Today, Black Bear is unveiling a new kind of heist flick with the debut of their trailer for Daniel Roher’s (Navalny) latest project, Tuner. Starring Leo Woodall (Nuremberg) and Dustin Hoffman (All the President’s Men), the movie, which is slated for a limited domestic release on May 22 with a wider opening to follow on May 29, poses the question of what you might do when your passion turns against you. Once a talented pianist with perfect pitch, Niki (Woodall) now works alongside Harry (Hoffman) for the latter’s piano tuning company. As we learn from one of the pair’s first jobs in the trailer, Niki has a rare condition called hyperacusis, which makes everyday noises, like a motorcycle revving or construction work, painfully loud. During one of his gigs, Niki encounters a group of burglars who are using drills to break into a safe. Promising them he’ll help them as long as they quit making such an unbearable ruckus, Niki uses his condition as an aid to crack the code. After Harry ends up in the hospital with a gargantuan medical bill, Niki rushes to his rescue and dives headfirst into the criminal world as a safe breaker to raise the necessary funds. However, after his life and those of his loved ones are put in peril, he’ll begin to question whether he should have just stayed in the piano tuning biz. In addition to leading performances from Woodall and Hoffman, Tuner also features a supporting ensemble that includes Havana Rose Liu (Lurker), Tovah Feldshuh (Nobody Wants This), Jean Reno (The Big Blue), Lior Raz (Hit & Run), Gil Cohen (When Heroes Fly), and Nissan Sakira (The Serials).
Meet the Creatives Behind ‘Tuner’
Tuner marks the narrative feature debut for Roher, who previously wowed audiences and critics alike with his Academy Award-winning documentary, Navalny. The documentarian also holds credits as the helmer behind other celebrated titles, including Once Were Brothers and Ghosts of Our Forest, with his The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist soon celebrating its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Roher co-penned the screenplay for Tuner with Robert Ramsey, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Courtney L. Cunniff, John Friedberg, Andrew Golov, Noah Segal, Christina Piovesan, and Mary Ann Waterhouse. JoAnne Sellar, Lila Yacoub, Teddy Schwarzman, and Michael Heimler produce.
