Sam Raimi’s 113-Minute Hit Is Just $3 Million Shy of Overtaking His Most Devilishly Entertaining Horror Movie
Mar 4, 2026
Having reached the end of the line, director Sam Raimi’s latest film, Send Help, remains on the edge of a major box office milestone. The movie was rumored to be heading for a direct-to-digital debut, but Raimi convinced the top brass at 20th Century Studios to give it a theatrical run. The decision paid off, with Send Help delivering solid box office results on the back of excellent reviews. Raimi’s terrific track record — he has generated billions for studios — no doubt helped his case. Send Help was probably never expected to perform like some of his earlier blockbusters, but it has grossed twice its reported budget at the worldwide box office, which means that it has likely turned a profit even before hitting the home video market. However, it remains painfully shy of overtaking Raimi’s last horror movie, which was released in 2009.
Send Help stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien as co-workers stranded on an island. As tensions rise, resentments escalate. Send Help opened to positive reviews at the end of January, and is now sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 93% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The website’s consensus reads, “Putting director Sam Raimi’s penchant for diabolical mayhem to great use, Send Help doesn’t need any assistance in thrills thanks to a very game Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien along with a viciously clever script.”

‘Send Help’ Could Overtake Sam Raimi’s 2009 Cult Classic By the End of Its Run
The movie exceeded expectations by grossing $19 million in its domestic debut. It remains one of the top 10 films at the domestic box office a month later, which means that it could add another couple of million dollars to its total before the dust settles. As things stand, Send Help is trailing Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell by approximately $3 million. The new film’s cumulative global box office haul stands at $88 million against a reported budget of $40 million, while Drag Me to Hell concluded its run with $91 million against a reported budget of $30 million. Starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long, Drag Me to Hell has since cemented itself as a cult classic; the movie holds a “Certified Fresh” 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Sam Raimi returns to top form with Drag Me to Hell, a frightening, hilarious, delightfully campy thrill ride.”
You can watch Drag Me to Hell at home and Send Help in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
