25 Years Later, Angelina Jolie’s Video Game Icon Returns to the Spotlight Before Prime Video’s Revival
Mar 14, 2026
Prime Video’s new Tomb Raider series has all eyes on it. With Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner leading the series as Lara Croft, the fans are in for a ride. The first look at the actor appeared last month in the form of a costume reveal, as well as some later set photos showcasing a thrilling fight and full-throttle chaos that video game fans will appreciate. Further, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as writer/creator and additional cast memberssuch as Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs, the audience can expect a fresh take on the games’ characters and story.
The long-running video game franchise has been a fan favorite, spawning multiple games and movies. Nonetheless, the most famous/infamous movie that remains in mass consciousness is Angelina Jolie-led Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The movie follows Lara as she races against a secret society known as the Illuminati to find the two halves of an ancient artifact that can control time. The feature was a massive hit, earning $274.7 million worldwide, but garnered only a 20% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. While the movie was criticized for a thin plot, Jolie’s casting was hailed as perfect. The movie’s success led to the sequel, The Cradle of Life, in which Lara is recruited by MI6 to find the mythical Pandora’s Box before it falls into the hands of a bioterrorist who intends to use its contents as a plague. The film added further star power with the cast, including Gerard Butler and Ciarán Hinds. The movie was considered a box office disappointment, earning $160.1 million worldwide on a $95 million budget. Now it seems like fans are revisiting the movies in preparation for the upcoming series. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and follow-up The Cradle of Life went as high as the #7 and #5 spots on Tubi charts, respectively, this past week.

Are Agjelina Jolie’s ‘Lara Croft’ Movies Worth Your Time?
In retrospect, yes. Jolie perfectly embodies Lara Croft. The dual pistols, braids, the action sequences, and her aura blew the audience’s minds. However, the movies never quite figured out whether they wanted to be a supernatural adventure, a slick action thriller, or a campy video game adaptation, which messed up the tone a lot. With some good performances across the board, some fans feel the script doesn’t do justice to the characters. But the features can be seen as a time capsule of 2000s blockbuster energy. It’s fun in its own chaotic way, and it shows how far video game adaptations have come since then.
Meanwhile, check out the Tomb Raider franchise on Tubi. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
