Yellowstone fans can rejoice, as its latest spin-off series will continue on for at least another season. Fresh off a record-breaking premiere, Taylor Sheridan continues to have success with his neo-western franchise, which has expanded to several new projects since the parent show’s finale. The latest of which has only released two episodes, but it has not taken very long for the network to decide its fate past the first 13-episode season. CBS has officially renewed Marshals for Season 2, it was announced on Thursday. The network also revealed that the series premiere on Mar. 1 garnered 20.6 million multiplatform viewers within its first week on the air, beating the previous record set by Young Sheldon in 2017 as the most-watched network original series premiere. It’s a truly stunning debut for the new Yellowstone spin-off, and while data was not provided about the second episode’s viewership, it is safe to say that audiences are flocking to the series. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach shared the following statement:
“MARSHALS delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV’s most powerful new series. The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold character driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes.”
Marshals stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, who now forms part of an elite group of U.S. Marshals tasked with bringing justice to Montana. He is joined by a brand-new main cast, including Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade), Arielle Kebbel (I Can Only Imagine 2), Ash Santos (American Horror Story) and Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon). Returning Yellowstone members are Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton. With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates – Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) – must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation.

The early Marshals Season 2 renewal arrives after critics delivered a less-than-favorable verdict on the Yellowstone spin-off series. As of this writing, the show currently boasts a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 reviews. Some critics have pointed out how the CBS show acts more like a network procedural, feeling less like a meaningful expansion of the Dutton storyline. Meanwhile, general audiences seem to feel a similar way, as user ratings garnered an even more disappointing 32% on the Popcornmeter scale on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, the viewership numbers don’t lie, and with another season on the way, there is plenty of room (and time) for improvement.

One of the more divisive parts of Marshals, outside of being a rather separate part of the Yellowstone universe, is how it impacts the storyline set in the original series. Some feel that Kayce Dutton, once again brilliantly played by Luke Grimes, loses some of the character development he earned in the first five-season run. This is especially due to his wife, Monica Dutton, whose unexpected fate encourages Kayce to follow the “hero” that was in him all along and leave behind the quiet family life. That said, Marshals is still in its early stages, and its positives, which include featuring more action than any other Yellowstone entry, are there for audiences to enjoy.
