‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Finale Says Goodbye to Dr. Samira Mohan

Apr 18, 2026

The Pitt Season 2 finale closed out the current run with a significant departure from Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. True to the show’s style, the episode didn’t treat the exit like an unexpected twist, but instead let the moment unfold with the kind of quiet finality that can hit even harder. That goodbye belongs to Dr. Samira Mohan, with Supriya Ganesh exiting the series as Mohan’s residency at PTMC comes to an end. Ganesh has been a series regular since The Pitt debuted, which makes this one of the finale’s biggest structural changes as the series looks ahead to Season 3.

It’s all pretty underplayed. In the episode, Mohan tells Dr. Robby that she is considering a move into geriatrics, which echoes a suggestion he made earlier in the season. It’s a small but telling beat, giving her departure a sense of direction rather than letting it be an abrupt disappearance. The finale also gave Mohan and Robby a quiet moment of closure near the ambulance bay, where she wished him safety on his upcoming sabbatical despite the tension that had often shaped their relationship. Her last appearance came on the hospital roof, where she watched the Fourth of July fireworks alongside her colleagues. Because Mohan hasn’t been written out by some sort of catastrophe, and the finale instead lets her move forward professionally, she’s theoretically free to return to the show. The choice also keeps the focus on PTMC as a working hospital, and helps The Pitt preserve the reality that has been one of its strongest defining features.

The exit reflects the “revolving door” reality of a teaching hospital, where residents naturally move on to fellowships or other roles. It makes practical sense for the series and also signals a broader willingness to let the ensemble evolve in a believable way rather than freeze its characters in place. After all, fans of ER will know all about how beloved characters can dip in and out of a long-running show, with Noah Wyle’s Carter leaving after Season 11 but returning for Seasons 12 and 15. On the topic of Ganesh returning, creator R. Scott Gemmill told Variety: “I don’t know. I don’t think so, but you never know. If there’s a good reason and a good story, or if the show demands it, if the storylines demand it, for sure. We’re still in some of the early stages of figuring out Season 3.”

Season 3 is already adjusting to the absence. Ayesha Harris, who plays night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming third season. That doesn’t make Mohan easy to replace, but suggests the show is treating this farewell as part of a larger transition rather than an isolated cast shake-up.

The timing is also notable because Mohan’s exit lands in a finale filled with unresolved fallout elsewhere, which leaves her departure standing apart for one simple reason. While several other arcs are clearly being held open, hers gets a real ending. The Pitt is expected to return for Season 3 in January 2027, and when it does, PTMC will look noticeably different.
