One of the original Harry Potter stars thinks the upcoming HBO reboot has one clear advantage over the original film franchise – time. The upcoming television series has been under a lot of scrutiny since its inception, but it sounds like another franchise icon is excited to see how the new version manages to outdo the films by diving deeper into the material. Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the eight original movies, believes the longer TV format will offer fans a fuller version of the story than the films ever could. Speaking at Calgary Expo (via Collider), Wright said the new adaptation should benefit from having more space to explore character relationships and smaller book moments that were cut from the movies. That is one of the core arguments for the reboot, and it is also the one longtime fans are most likely to take seriously. For Wright, that extra time isn’t just about scale, but about adding nuance to the story. She said the reboot could bring back the quieter, more detailed scenes that make the books work so well, and that approach could definitely help flesh out characters who felt thinner on screen than they did on the page.
“As a fan of stories, there’s like a million different characters that I’d love to pick up shows to. I love all the Aurors that make up the Order of the Phoenix. I love the Marauders’ Map story. I love Lupin, Sirius Black, all those. As a fan of stories, I want that story because I feel like we spend so much time with our characters. So I honestly love a new story and a new world to spin off. I would love to see, like, the 10 years before Harry’s parents die, that [time].”
Wright’s support arrives while the new Harry Potter series is still trying to win over skeptics. Since the reboot was first announced, many fans have questioned why HBO is revisiting such a successful franchise at all, and the first trailer sparked criticism from viewers who felt it looked too close to the movies to fully justify a fresh start.

The original Harry Potter star’s comments get to something the movies could never solve. The books grew denser and more character-driven as the series went on, while the films had to keep fitting that material into feature-length runtimes. HBO’s version is reportedly being designed as a long-term project, with one season dedicated to each book, giving the franchise far more room to breathe. Ginny is the most obvious example of someone who could also get more screentime. Wright has said she hopes the HBO series gives Harry and Ginny’s relationship a more natural progression than the movies did, rather than reducing her character to a late-stage love interest. She has also pointed out that the book Ginny is far more fiery and confident than viewers largely saw in the original adaptation.

Wright has some equally straightforward advice for the new cast: start with the books and build their performances from the source material, rather than trying to mimic the actors who came before. For a reboot this high profile, that’s probably the smartest possible approach, as fans are unlikely to respond well to imitation and will be far more open to interpretations that feel grounded in the novels.

There’s additional weight behind Wright’s endorsement, as she has been candid in the past about her own frustrations with the films. She said she didn’t always feel that she had the opportunity to fully portray Ginny’s depth, which makes her support for the reboot feel less like loyalty to the franchise and more like a genuine argument for the format. If HBO is going to persuade fans to return to Hogwarts, that is still its strongest pitch. The new Harry Potter does not need to replace the movies. It needs to prove it can finally make room for everything they had to leave out.
