‘The Boys’ Creator Eric Kripke Confirms Jensen Ackles’ Exit as Soldier Boy Before Season 5 Finale
May 19, 2026
Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys is fast approaching its final days, as its next Season 5 episode will be the series finale. Running for seven years and 40 episodes overall, The Boys has been one of the streamer’s biggest hits, offering a grounded look at the superhero world and holding nothing back in terms of violence, gore, and dark storylines. This season has delivered one shocking moment after another, starting off with A-Train’s death at Homelander’s hands. After being absent for almost all of Season 4, Season 5 has also featured Jensen Ackles’s return as Soldier Boy, reuniting him with creator Eric Kripke after 15 years of work together on Supernatural. The season even included a wild Supernatural reunion, as Ackles got to share the screen with Jared Padalecki (Mr. Marathon) and Misha Collins (Malchemical) before Soldier Boy killed Malchemical and broke Mr. Marathon’s legs in Episode 5, with Antony Starr’s Homelander finishing off Padalecki’s Supe. Now, with only one episode remaining, a new quote indicates Soldier Boy’s surprising fate as the show inches closer to its end. Speaking with Collider, The Boys creator Eric Kripke confirmed that Jensen Ackles’s time as Soldier Boy on The Boys has officially come to an end after Season 5, Episode 7. Discussing the line in which Ackles mentions “fixing up the Impala,” which references the 1967 Chevrolet Impala his Dean Winchester drove in all 15 seasons of Supernatural, Kripke noted that this reference was included very deliberately:
“Knowing that that was going to be Jensen’s last scene in the series, we wanted to put in one last reference. Honestly, [writer Anslem Richardson] wrote and we shot that it was a Ford. It was, ‘Working on the old Ford.’ The danger of having (director) Phil Sgriccia and I, sitting next to each other in editing, which we would do, was that we were watching it and Phil was like, ‘Should it be ‘Impala’?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, it should definitely be ‘Impala.'” And so, Jenson looped in ‘Impala just to do one last nod.”
Prime Video
At the end of Episode 7, after a major verbal sparring session between Homelander and Soldier Boy, Homelander chokes his father into unconsciousness. However, instead of killing him, he puts Soldier Boy back into a cryogenic chamber (similar to how he entered the show in Season 3), ensuring that he survives. Unfortunately, this means Ackles will be one of the biggest characters missing from the series finale. Thankfully, Ackles’s tenure as Soldier Boy is far from over, as he will reprise the role in the upcoming Vought Rising prequel series for Prime Video. This series will highlight Vought’s origins in the 1950s and show Soldier Boy’s early exploits, reuniting him with Aya Cash’s Stormfront and putting her dark and diabolical nature in the spotlight.
The series finale of The Boys will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video on May 20, 2026.
