‘Legally Blonde’ Returns in New Trailer for Prime Video Series

Jun 10, 2026

Legally Blonde (2001) starred Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a perky, pink-clad undergrad who decides to go to Harvard Law School, where she proves her doubters wrong. Elle is a new prequel series that will explore what she was up to in high school, and it’s coming to Prime Video next month. “We meet her in 1995 as a fish in the tumultuous waters of high school where she encounters tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and questionable fashion choices,” reads the official logline, per The Hollywood Reporter. “Through it all, Elle uses her family as a touchstone, and forms an even tighter bond to her mother, proving that they can get through anything life throws their way as long as they have each other. With each challenge she faces, Elle grows closer to the Elle Woods we know and love today.” The logline mentions Elle’s mother, who makes only a brief appearance in the original film, where she’s played by Tané McClure. In the show, she’ll be played by June Diane Raphael. Lexi Minetree will play Elle herself, while Reese Witherspoon is on board as an executive producer. Watch the trailer below:

The logline leaves out quite a bit about the story. The show begins with Elle’s family living in sunny Bel-Air. But Elle’s parents end up moving her to Seattle, where Elle has to adjust to rainy weather and classmates who would rather wear plaid than pink. “Seattle isn’t a costume, and pink isn’t a personality,” one of them tells her. Odds are that Elle will eventually win over her high school classmates in the same way she wins over her Harvard Law School classmates in Legally Blonde. Apparently, she helps uncover some kind of conspiracy at her new school. Sooner or later, the show will probably have to bring Elle and her family back to Bel-Air, if the producers want things to be as they are at the beginning of Legally Blonde. The series has already been renewed for a second season, so they have some runway to work with.

Elle is the latest in a long line of Legally Blonde sequels and spin-offs. Witherspoon returned for Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde in 2003. In 2009, a lesser-known film called Legally Blondes was produced, about Elle’s twin British cousins. There’s been talk of a third Legally Blonde movie for years, although it’s never materialized. Finally, a Legally Blonde stage musical debuted in 2007 and has played consistently around the world ever since. Although there’s nothing in the works at the moment, it wouldn’t be shocking if the stage musical followed in the footsteps of Mean Girls and eventually got a movie adaptation. For now, we have Elle, which also stars Tom Everett Scott, Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zac Looker. All eight episodes of Elle will drop on Prime Video on Jul. 1.
