Amazon Cancels Release Of Andrew Garfield’s New AI Movie Artificial
Jun 20, 2026
Andrew Garfield’s upcoming movie release has been cancelled. Garfield’s career began on UK TV series and on stage before exploding when joining the MCU for The Amazing Spider-Man. He has since received two Academy Award nominations for Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick… Boom!. With his roles in The Social Network, We Live in Time, and Banner of Heaven, the actor has remained an incredibly versatile star in Hollywood known for his authentically raw performances. Deadline received a statement from Amazon MGM stating that the movie created by Luca Guadagnino titled Artificial will no longer be released by the studio. Puck News first reported that Amazon had stepped back, with talks taking place among several studios about the film’s future.
“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker – not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue. We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”
From a screenplay by Simon Rick (known for Saturday Night Live) and directed by Guadagnino, Artificial shows Sam Altman (played by Garfield) and the creation of OpenAI, including the company and its turbulence in 2023, leading to Altman being fired temporarily before being rehired in just a few days. The cast included Mark Rylance, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman and Ike Barinholtz. Guadagnino had two major releases with Amazon, including After The Hunt, which also starred Garfield, and Challengers. Romantic sports drama Challengers became the highest grossing film of his career and starred Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. After being announced last year, it’s not fully clear why Amazon parted ways from Artificial. However, Amazon has a long-running relationship with OpenAI after announcing a $50 billion investment, with Amazon chief Jeff Bezos also being a leading advocate for developing AI technology. Perhaps the portrait that Guadagnino painted challenged the very ideals that both Amazon and OpenAI stand for.
Garfield has a few upcoming projects, including Voyagers, Wild Things, and The Uprising, as well as celebrating the release of his latest title, The Magic Faraway Tree. It’s unclear when or even if Artificial will be released following Amazon’s departure, but as stated by the company, they will be working closely with Guadagnino to find a suitable replacement.
