Why Netflix Canceled Sci-Fi Hit ‘The Boroughs’ After One Season

Jun 21, 2026

Streaming hits don’t usually get canceled mid-victory lap. A show lands, the reviews glow, it climbs the Nielsen charts, and a renewal starts to feel like a formality, right up until the studio makes a decision. That’s what just happened to one of Netflix’s most warmly received new series of the year, and the reasoning behind the decision is finally coming into focus. The Boroughs, the supernatural sci-fi series executive-produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, has been canceled after a single season, barely a month on from its May debut. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the show paired a powerhouse cast of Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman with a premise that handed the genre over to retirees rather than teenagers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, June 15 marked Netflix’s deadline to extend the cast’s options, and the streamer chose not to. That call effectively ended the series, despite a writers’ room already at work and reported plans to shoot a second and third season back-to-back. The timing stung a little extra, landing with only a few days left in Emmy voting. Part of the issue, a source said to THR, is blunt economics: sci-fi is expensive, and The Boroughs leaned hard on effects and an ensemble of veterans. The Duffers also signed with Paramount in August, ending their long Netflix deal this past April, and the brothers’ exit reportedly left the partnership somewhat strained. A source close to Netflix pushed back on that framing, calling the move a straightforward business decision. There is another factor within the executive ranks: the team that greenlit The Boroughs — Peter Friedlander and Blair Fetter — has since left for Amazon MGM, so the current regime inherited a show it never championed. Netflix owns the series outright as both studio and platform, which makes a rescue elsewhere unlikely, and multiple sources told THR there will be no revival.

None of this will land well with viewers, given the numbers. The Boroughs debuted at No. 2 on Nielsen’s streaming chart in its first week, drew roughly 9.5 million views, and holds a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes against a 79% audience rating. It also did something Netflix data rarely shows, building a real following among older viewers the platform tends to overlook. For a show that drew Stranger Things comparisons and pulled that audience in, the cancellation looks less like a ratings failure than a casualty of timing, cost, and a producer already halfway out the door.

The season-one finale left several threads deliberately open, which felt like something a writers’ room expected to pick up later. Whether anyone ever does is the question Netflix has now left hanging, but it seems unlikely.
