Prime Video Cancels Star-Studded, R-Rated Sitcom ‘Kevin’ After One Season

Amazon Prime Video
Amazon has canceled Kevin, an adult animated sitcom about a neurotic tuxedo cat (Jason Schwartzman) who moves out on his own after the human couple who takes care of him breaks up. Finding life on the streets of New York City difficult, he moves into a pet rescue in Astoria, Queens, where he lives with a bunch of other misfit animals. The show also starred Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters, Amy Sedaris, and Plaza herself in leading roles, and counted actors like Quinta Brunson and Cary Elwes among its guest stars. Kevin was created by Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza and her real-life ex, actor and comedian Joe Wengert. They really did live together in New York City, they really did have a tuxedo cat named Kevin, and they really did have to reckon with what to do with him after they broke up. According to Deadline, Plaza took to Instagram to express her disappointment. “Amazon Prime is not picking up Kevin for another season,” she wrote. “Very disappointing since we were just getting going. I want to say thank you to all the fans that watched our show and all of the incredible cast and crew that worked so hard to make this dream come alive…”
I remember on the early days of Parks & Rec when we all thought we would be canceled because our ratings weren’t great. Our numbers. But we had some special humans over at NBC that believed in the show and let us grow and let audiences fall in love with our characters. I was hoping for this for Kevin but sadly we are living in a different time in our industry. I hope the machines won’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday. Love you all very much. Meow.
Plaza’s mention of “the machines” may be a reference to the increasing prevalence of AI in the entertainment industry. As for her wish for Kevin to find “a new owner someday,” we’ll watch and wait. All eight episodes are available to stream now on Prime Video. The show got decent reviews — it has a 60% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 82% rating from viewers — but that wasn’t enough to save it.
Prime Video may not have the reputation of Netflix when it comes to canceling shows, but it’s no slouch. In 2025, it canceled the action series Butterfly and Countdown after one season apiece. It opted not to continue The Boys spin-off Gen V, and canceled an upcoming Stargate reboot before it even started production.
