Few forces in TV have had the run like Taylor Sheridan has had the last few years. His Yellowstone series quietly became a major small-screen sensation, with each season becoming more popular than the last. From there, it only made sense to start expanding on the concept, offering up prequels that explored earlier years of the Dutton family and their place in the wide-open plains of America. Sheridan’s work in the Yellowstone franchise is only one piece of the puzzle, as his expansions outside of the franchise similarly triumphed. There’s really no limit to the success Sheridan could earn, as titles like Mayor of Kingstown, Landman, Tulsa King, and Lioness have all earned various degrees of victory with the release of each season. Even if these titles don’t particularly dominate the awards circuit, nearly any week of the year, you’re bound to see one of his shows in the top ten of their respective streaming services. Despite the immense popularity of Sheridan’s works, he seemed to be no match for Nicolas Cage and his return to the world of comic books. According to Nielsen Reports, per The Hollywood Reporter, the Yellowstone sequel series Dutton Ranch came in behind Spider-Noir in ratings for the week of May 25-31. The ratings were close, though, with Spider-Noir scoring 851 million minutes streamed compared to Dutton Ranch’s 782 million. What’s worth noting, however, is that all eight episodes of Spider-Noir are available, while there were only four episodes of Dutton Ranch available during this timeframe. Looking at a per-episode average, Dutton Ranch easily topples Spider-Noir. As more episodes are released, Dutton Ranch could overtake Spider-Noir in the coming weeks.

Another interesting detail about these ratings is seeing just how well Netflix’s The Boroughs performed in this timeframe. The show was produced by Matt and Ross Duffer and, even apart from that behind-the-scenes connection, the concept of that sci-fi program was similar to the narrative of Stranger Things. The Boroughs scored strong reviews from critics, and while its first week on Netflix was impressive, the streamer doubted the series had staying power, resulting in its cancellation. Given that the Duffer Brothers were attached to the series in any capacity, it seemed like a given that we’d be getting multiple seasons of the sci-fi series. However, they recently signed a deal with Paramount for future projects, and the budget for each episode of The Boroughs was reportedly higher than Netflix would like. Even with the Season 1 finale including teases of future episodes and a writers’ room being assembled for a follow-up season, Netflix surprisingly pulled the plug on the program.
