Spielberg’s Curiosity Outpaces His Story

Jul 5, 2026

Disclosure Day follows Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City television meteorologist, and Dr. Daniel Kellner, a cybersecurity expert working for a secretive government organization known as WARDEX. When long-hidden information regarding extraterrestrial life begins to surface, the pair find themselves caught in a race to uncover the truth while powerful forces attempt to keep that information from reaching the public. Set against a backdrop of government secrecy, unexplained phenomena, and questions about humanity’s place in the universe, the film explores what happens when the truth can no longer be contained.
The Good
The strongest aspect of Disclosure Day is undoubtedly its cast. Emily Blunt absolutely carries this movie. She delivers the strongest performance in the film and gives Margaret a level of authenticity that keeps the story grounded even when things become increasingly fantastical. Whether she’s handling the emotional moments, the mystery elements, or the larger sci-fi concepts, she consistently sells everything the movie asks of her.
I was also impressed by Josh O’Connor. He brings an everyman quality to Daniel Kellner that makes him easy to connect with. He’s not presented as some larger-than-life action hero. He’s just a guy trying to make sense of an increasingly impossible situation, and O’Connor does a great job making that feel believable.

Colman Domingo is excellent as well, though at this point that’s hardly surprising. Domingo has become one of those actors who consistently elevates whatever project he’s in, and Disclosure Day is no exception. Colin Firth also makes for a compelling antagonist whose presence helps drive much of the tension throughout the film.
Speaking of tension, Steven Spielberg once again proves why he’s one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. The chase sequences in this movie are fantastic. Spielberg understands suspense better than almost anyone working today. Several of the film’s action scenes had me completely locked in, particularly the various pursuit sequences scattered throughout the story. Even when I wasn’t fully invested in the narrative itself, I was absolutely invested in the moment-to-moment tension.
L to R: Josh O’Connor and Emily Blunt in DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.
Visually, the film is exactly what you’d expect from Spielberg. The cinematography is excellent, the practical effects work is impressive, and the movie consistently looks great. Spielberg has always understood how to create scale and wonder without relying exclusively on visual effects, and that approach works well here. The film feels cinematic in a way that many modern blockbusters simply do not. I also appreciated how quickly the movie gets moving. There is very little setup before the story begins throwing audiences directly into the mystery. It creates an immediate sense of momentum that helps keep viewers engaged.
The Bad
My biggest issue with Disclosure Day is the writing. The film raises fascinating questions about extraterrestrial life, government secrecy, and how humanity might react to learning we are not alone. Unfortunately, it never fully explores those questions in a meaningful way.
Josh O’Connor is Dr. Daniel Kellner and Eve Hewson is Jane Blankenship in DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.
What frustrated me most is that the movie seems more interested in presenting a specific answer than genuinely exploring the possibilities. It talks about multiple potential reactions to such a world-changing revelation, but ultimately focuses almost entirely on one perspective. That approach made the story feel less authentic and less interesting than it could have been.
Human beings are complicated. People respond to major events in dramatically different ways. If you’re going to build an entire movie around a question this big, I wanted to see a broader range of reactions. Instead, the film often feels like it’s telling the audience how things should be rather than exploring how things actually might be.
DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.
I also think the marketing does the movie a disservice. Without getting into spoilers, many of the trailers reveal far too much. The central mystery driving the film is presented as a major question, but much of that question is effectively answered before audiences even buy a ticket. That robs portions of the movie of their impact.
The ending didn’t fully work for me either. The film builds considerable intrigue and curiosity throughout its runtime, but when it finally reaches the finish line, I was left wanting more. It isn’t necessarily sequel bait, but it does feel incomplete. Instead of delivering a truly satisfying payoff to the questions it raises, the movie leaves too much hanging in the air.
Ultimately, the script feels like a mismatch with Spielberg’s strengths. The directing is strong. The performances are strong. The visuals are strong. The screenplay simply isn’t operating at the same level.
The Verdict
Disclosure Day is a thrilling sci-fi mystery that raises fascinating questions but never quite delivers answers that feel equally compelling. Steven Spielberg’s legendary status inevitably creates certain expectations, and that’s where the film struggles. The movie isn’t bad. In fact, it’s entertaining throughout most of its runtime. The performances are excellent, the action sequences are exciting, and Spielberg’s craftsmanship is on full display.
The problem is that the story never reaches the same heights as the filmmaking. There is plenty of intriguing buildup and several thought-provoking ideas, but the overall narrative feels less satisfying than the journey that leads to it. The movie creates curiosity, but it never fully scratches the itch that curiosity creates.
Director Steven Spielberg on the set of DISCLOSURE DAY.
That said, even a lesser Spielberg film is still a Spielberg film. His ability to create tension, deliver spectacle, and craft memorable cinematic moments remains largely unmatched. There are directors who would consider this movie the best work of their careers.
For Spielberg, though, it lands somewhere below his highest achievements. Disclosure Day is absolutely worth watching, especially for fans of science fiction and Spielberg’s work. I just wouldn’t place it among his most memorable films.
