We can only imagine what could have been for TV shows that were cancelled too soon, many after just one season. Shows get canned for multiple reasons, but primarily because of declining ratings, high production costs, and network programming shifts. However, many were also revived years after, thanks to mounting clamor from fans. One show gained such a strong cult following that it’s finally getting a reboot, 23 years after the original’s release. In the era of appointment TV, it was not uncommon for network shows to have full seasons of up to 20 episodes, which is ideal for dramas with overarching stories. However, the airtime slots were very limited compared to today’s streaming landscape, and the handful of networks competed for prime-time viewership. Firefly had a fighting chance with its Friday 8 P.M. slot, and it also had the potential to become the biggest show on TV — it was a space Western with a compelling premise, told in an episodic format with an underlying continuity.

Fox botched all that potential with misleading marketing, and those who did tune in to the show were confused because the episodes aired out of order. Series creator Joss Whedon envisioned Firefly to last seven seasons, but the first season suffered from low ratings, and Fox canceled the show in 2002 after airing only 11 episodes. The completed 14 episodes were later released on home media, giving fans a proper, though unsatisfying, season finale. Last March, Firefly lead star Nathan Fillion confirmed an animated series was in the works, and co-stars Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau are all returning to voice their characters. The reboot is set between the events of Firefly and the 2005 full-length film continuation, Serenity. While appearing on a panel at MCM Comic-Con, Fillion revealed the series is stuck in development, confirming that the process “takes a lot longer than one would hope.” Tudyk also hinted that 20th Television Animation, which controls the rights to the franchise, holds all the cards at the moment. The reboot series also has yet to find a streaming home.
“It’s in process much like developing photos when we were young… You drop them off to some guy who was certainly stoned, and you’d pick them up a little while later after he’s done rifling through all of your personal images. So, we’re in the rifling through the personal images part. We’re not ready to pick them up, but when we do, you will hear.”

Set in a far future where humans have abandoned Earth to colonize the galaxy, Firefly follows a ragtag crew led by Captain Mal Reynolds (Fillion), a former soldier who’s taken to smuggling to make ends meet and keep his spaceship, the Serenity, going. Reynolds chooses to scrape by outside the control of the Alliance, the centralized authority governing the interplanetary system. The show’s opening narration perfectly captures its premise: “Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work. A gun would help you keep it. A captain’s goal was simple: Find a crew. Find a job. Keep flying.”

Despite its short run, Firefly garnered an overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences and critics, and fans continue to clamor for a proper revival. Whedon reworked the script into a film after the show was canceled, and Universal Pictures picked up the project, releasing Serenity in 2005. Firefly has since expanded into a media franchise, and comic books and novels continue to flesh out Whedon’s vision for the original series.
