In a disappointing turn of events, one of the MCU’s most-acclaimed shows has been cancelled shortly after it was confirmed for a second-season run. Featuring quirky and relatable characters, the series gained quite a following for its meta commentary on Hollywood, the superhero genre, and the movie industry in general. We’ve already seen projects that were un-cancelled in response to fan uproar, so there’s always hope for a renewal if people want it bad enough. Fans were stoked when Disney announced Wonder Man was renewed for Season 2 in March, two months after the series premiered. However, Variety reported yesterday that the studio has dropped the project. Insiders revealed that the writers were never called to develop a second-season script, but were instead released from their commitments. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II addressed the update on Instagram, thanking the fans and everyone who embraced the series. The actor also mentioned receiving messages from people who said the show inspired them when they were at a low point in their lives. “I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day… I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool,” he said. He took the setback in stride and focused on the positive, appreciating everybody for sharing their passion for the show online.
“That’s life, right? Everything will shake out… The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it… I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”

Series creator Andrew Guest also shared Abdul-Mateen II’s sentiment in an Instagram Story, thanking the cast, the fans, and the critics who supported the series’ short-lived run.
“Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man. So proud of the show we made. So grateful to have worked with Destin Daniel Cretton, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley. Want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us.”
Wonder Man ranked first among Disney+’s top ten TV shows in the US two days after its debut, and it performed equally well in 16 international territories. The series was also well-received with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 87% and 91% from audiences and critics. Abdul-Mateen II’s performance also earned him a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series at this year’s Emmy Awards. Wonder Man starred Abdul Mateen II as Simon Williams, a superhuman and struggling actor who auditions for the lead role in an in-universe “Wonder Man” movie adaptation. Williams’ abilities have only caused problems for him as a child, and he has since kept his powers a secret, knowing he would never work again in Hollywood if people found out. Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor Slattery, reprising his role in Iron Man 3. Wonder Man gives Slattery his redemption arc after his botched impersonation of the Mandarin, by becoming Williams’ mentor and confidant.

Wonder Man offered something fresh by depicting how the superheroes lived their daily lives, far removed from the world-ending events of the multiverse. It’s still deeply integrated into the MCU, but it’s entirely set in Hollywood and an entertainment industry that has banned superpowered individuals from ever working in productions, following a tragic on-set accident caused by a superhuman. The series finale ended with a tease that Williams has finally embraced his powers, so it’s entirely possible he could still rejoin the MCU despite the cancellation.
