FX’s Breakout Dysfunctional Kitchen Drama Returns In June

Mar 13, 2023

One of our favorite shows of last year, “The Bear,” returns for Season 2 in June. We named it one of the Best TV Shows of 2022, some of its episodes made our list of the Best TV Episodes of 2022, and it was on our list of the Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2023. So yes, we love the breakout series, “The Bear” which seemed to come out of nowhere last summer but took the world of TV by storm for all of those eagle-eyed TV viewers like us. “The Bear” also came out of nowhere. Created by Christopher Storer—who?— well, it turns out he’s a writer/director-producer who wasn’t super well-known but has worked with a lot of great comedians. Storer produced Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” had directed many of his comedy specials and the Peabody Award-winning Netflix special “Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King.” Storer had also directed great episodes of shows like “Ramy,” “Dickinson,” and “Little Voice,” and apparently was just primed and ready with his new show “The Bear.”
Starring the dynamic and incredible cast of Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Abby Elliott (with a memorable guest appearance by Jon Bernthal in a small, but critical role), “The Bear” is essentially a drama about a dysfunctional Chicago diner, but also a dysfunctional family—the real one behind the restaurant, but also the found family of those that work within its intense, sometimes toxic and agitated kitchen.

The series essentially centers on a young chef from the world of fine dining (White) who comes home to Chicago to run his family’s Italian beef sandwich shop after the suicide of his older brother, who left behind debts, a rundown kitchen, and an unruly staff. We spoke to both Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and the latter described the show fittingly as the “high-sodium volatility” of all the people within it.

Last night during the Oscars, FX revealed a new teaser that confirmed that “The Bear” was arriving this summer and would, in fact, debut in June, which is basically a one-year turnaround from 2022.  It’s been reported in the past that season two will have ten episodes, so that should be a good run. Additionally, Storer said on “The Moment With Brian Koppelman” podcast that his longtime girlfriend Gillian Jacobs may show up at some point and maybe in Season 2, so hopefully, that comes to pass as she would be an amazing edition. In the meantime, check out the new teaser below.
