Right now is a great time to be an X-Men fan, with new releases like X-Men ‘97 Season 2 out now and other exciting projects like Marvel’s Wolverine coming in just a few weeks. Wolverine is the latest Marvel game courtesy of Insomniac, the same studio that delivered all three beloved Spider-Man games in less than seven years. Marvel Studios is also hard at work on its new X-Men movie starring Sadie Sink as Jean Grey and Kit Connor as Cyclops, which is coming to theaters on May 5, 2028. Additional cast members for the film include Inde Navarette as Rogue, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and even Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury, aka Mister Sinister.

One character not yet confirmed to appear in Marvel’s X-Men movie is Mystique, who has been played by Rebecca Romjin and Jennifer Lawrence already in live-action. Mystique is set to appear in Marvel’s Wolverine game launching on September 15, and she’s also coming back to animation in the third season of X-Men ‘97, which arrives on Disney Plus next year. The X-Men ‘97 Season 2 finale teased her return when she killed Valerie Cooper, and now she has the chance to assume her position, should she choose to. Randall Carpenter is even returning to voice the character in Season 3 after playing her in X-Men: The Animated Series in the 1990s. Collider’s Maggie Lovitt recently moderated a panel for Carpenter and other X-Men icons like Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm) and Cal Dodd (Wolverine), at FAN EXPO Canada and Carpenter revealed that she didn’t even know she was auditioning for her return as Mystique before she got the part:
“I called my agent about a month before all this happened and said, ‘I think I’d like to get back in action.’ A little while after that I got an audition — nobody was attached to it, they weren’t saying what it was, there were all these made-up names. But there was something familiar about the words, this attitude. I thought, okay, I’ll do it. I didn’t hear anything for a while — and then I got a call saying, ‘Welcome back, Mystique.'”

Randall Carpenter Reveals the Biggest Difference in ‘X-Men: The Animated Series’ and ‘X-Men ’97′

Speaking about the difference in voice recording back in the 1990s vs. doing so now for X-Men ‘97, Carpenter shared: “In the first series we did everything together — it was theatrical, we were all in it together. This time you’re by yourself. Most of us are scattered around the world now.” Marvel Studios can send anyone the equipment they need to record their voice lines right at home. Redirecting to speak about slipping back into the role of Mystique after so many years, Carpenter said she’s like a “shapeshifter. I like to shift into any opportunity that presents itself. I’ve been doing voice work for a long time, and you don’t forget — it’s like getting back onto a horse.” Turning back the clock even further, Randall Carpenter harkened back to when she received a call from X-Men ‘97 voice director Meredith Layne, saying that she did “a Zoom call with Meredith, our great voice director, and she said, ‘Wow — when I listened to your audition, I got goosebumps because you sounded exactly the same.’ That sealed the deal [for me].” Mystique is set to have a major role in X-Men ‘97 Season 3 and possibly in Season 4, which is already confirmed to premiere in 2028, and with Carpenter stepping back into the role after this much time, X-Men fans are in for a treat when Season 3 premieres next year.
