In The Runner, Gal Gadot plays Maia, an attorney and mom who drops her son off at school to go for a quick jog before a big day in court. But the run ends up being much longer than she planned.

Soon she gets a phone call from her son Noah’s phone: Kidnappers have taken him, and insist that she keep running through a series of tasks if she wants her boy back.

Things escalate rapidly as the mysterious voice on the end of the line demands that she kill the star witness in her case. And so she’s sent on a mad dash though London to save her son — and outwit the bad guys before they can do incredible damage. They track her movements as she races through the woods, the streets, the Tube. It’s a trial that tests her endurance in every sense.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September, The Last King of Scotland) and written by Mark Gibson (The Wild), the film also stars Damien Lewis, Rory Wilmot and Alfred Enoch. In addition to showcasing the Wonder Woman star’s acting and action chops, The Runner promises to be a taut, efficient thriller with a runtime of just 84 minutes.

There are also hints that Gadot’s Maia has something in her past that may be about to catch up with her.Amazon MGM Studios calls it “a visceral, high-stakes race where every second counts, every choice carries a price, and a mother’s unstoppable love becomes the most dangerous weapon of all.”

The Runner premieres on Prime Video on September 2, from Amazon MGM Studios.
