Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ Sequel Hits Major Milestone Ahead of Streaming Return
Oct 23, 2026
The Yellowstone universe has grown so fast since the main series ended that it’s fair to wonder whether the franchise might be stretching itself a bit thin. That’s part of why Dutton Ranch came as something of a surprise. Beth and Rip always seemed like characters who might work better within the larger ensemble, but the spin-off connected in a big way for Paramount+, both commercially and critically. The show was renewed before its first season even finished, though there has been at least some uncertainty behind the scenes after creator and show runner Chad Feehan exited. Now, Kelly Reilly appears to have offered the clearest sign yet that season 2 is still firmly on track. Making a surprise appearance at Paramount’s UK Upfronts in London this week, Reilly confirmed that Dutton Ranch season 2 will officially begin filming in early 2027, per Deadline. The actress also took a moment to look back on the gamble of relocating one of television’s most popular couples, calling the show “a risk I’m proud we took, taking Beth from the mothership to start a new life in South Texas with lots of snakes.” Reflecting on the audience that followed Beth and Rip from Montana, she added: “The response across the world, well, I am surprised and grateful.”
An early 2027 start date isn’t entirely new information, to be fair. Reilly floated the same window back in July, telling The Hollywood Reporter at the time, “We’re slated to start early 2027 to film. But the [writing] room starts up pretty quick,” and noting, “I think we’re going to be very much involved in the room, so the next sort of six months is all about writing it.” What makes this week’s confirmation meaningful is everything that’s happened in between. Feehan’s departure and the hiring of SEAL Team creator Benjamin Cavell as his replacement could easily have pushed the schedule, since showrunner changes between seasons have derailed plenty of productions, and the Skydance merger closing earlier this month added another layer of corporate uncertainty to every Paramount project. Cameras rolling in early 2027 would plausibly put new episodes on Paramount+ before the end of next year, roughly matching the gap Yellowstone itself used to manage between seasons, though the streamer hasn’t committed to any release window and these schedules have a way of sliding. Whatever the date ends up being, the new season has a clear dramatic engine waiting for it. The season 1 finale left Beth and Rip’s found family in genuine jeopardy, with Carter’s abduction making the point that trading Montana for Rio Paloma didn’t buy them the quiet life Beth claimed to want.
There’s a reasonable argument that the show’s biggest test is still ahead, since season 1 benefited from the novelty of the relocation and the addition of veterans like Annette Bening and Ed Harris, while season 2 has to prove the premise can sustain itself under new creative leadership. Still, given how often Yellowstone offshoots have stumbled out of the gate, a hit this size holding its schedule through a showrunner change counts as quietly encouraging. All nine episodes of Dutton Ranch season 1 are streaming now on Paramount+.
