Scream 6 Star Reveals Her Ultimate Fan Casting for Sam & Tara’s Mother
Mar 21, 2023
Scream 6 star Melissa Barrera has revealed who she would love to play her character’s unseen mother. Her character Sam Carpenter first appeared in the legacy sequel Scream 2022, returning to the California town of Woodsboro to protect her estranged sister Tara (Jenna Ortega) when she is targeted in a new series of Ghostface killings, possibly due to Sam’s father’s identity as the original Ghostface. While both sisters returned in Scream 6, which came to theaters on March 10, their mother – who is implied to be a potentially abusive alcoholic – has never been seen in either film.

This week, Brazilian outlet CinePOP sat down with Barrera to discuss the release of Scream 6. During the interview, she was asked who she would like to see play Sam and Tara’s mother should she ever appear onscreen. Barrera’s answer was Eternals and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish star Salma Hayek, saying that working with her would be a “dream come true.” Read her full quote below:
I am dying to work with Salma Hayek, so it would be a dream come true to have her come in as the mom. It would be awesome!

Why Didn’t Sam and Tara’s Mother Appear in Scream 2022 or Scream 6?
Although she hasn’t ever been featured onscreen, Sam and Tara’s mother is an oppressive presence in both films. Sam’s relationship with her mother, which became strained when she discovered her father’s true identity, is what spilled over and caused her estrangement from her sister as well. Though they repaired their relationship over the course of Scream 2022, their mother didn’t return from out of town even when Tara was hospitalized.
Narratively, there could be several reasons that the Carpenter sisters’ mom has not yet appeared. Scream 2022 likely kept her offscreen as a way to make Tara seem more vulnerable, a trick that the original 1996 Scream also employed by having final girl Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) father leave town on a business trip. Scream 6, with its expanded cast and new location, likely didn’t have the bandwidth to toss in another character, perhaps explaining her absence there as well.
However, it could come to pass that their mother’s identity will prove incredibly important. Scream 6 is performing so well at the box office that is seems likely a potential Scream 7 is coming soon. Should that be the case, it may turn out that their mother is at the center of the new killer’s motive, echoing the fact that Sidney was targeted in the original trilogy because of her mother’s actions.
